My friend is having problems with her HP DV4 Notebook.

    1) The keyboard goes into crazy mode every now and then.
Sometimes she will press a key and it will take several seconds to appear.
Other times, she will hit backspace while in Internet Explorer, and it will take her into a new tab or a whole new program.
Pressing a key once, such as an r for example, will lead to 20 some r's before it stops.

    2) The fan seems very loud. She says it was like this since the day she bought it. Seems excessively loud to me.

    Any ideas would be welcome.
    Thanks

The fan is loud because the temperatures are high. The temperatures are high most likely because there is too much junk running. Do a clean install without quickplay, quick launch buttons, quicktouch, quick-anything, and it'll run much better. Whenever possible (especially for the wifi card) get drivers from card manufacturer not from HP.

Also, convince her to try Opera for a change. I've been an Opera user for several years, and when i fired up Internet Explorer 8 to give it a try i was like "no, this must be wrong. how can it be THIS SLOW???". Turns out there was nothing wrong with IE, that's how it runs. The only time you will still need Internet Explorer will be for a handful of sites with compatibility issues - i myself have stumbled only upon two, and i go to lots of places on the interwebz.

Thanks for the advice on the fan.

I don't think the keyboard problem has anything to do with the browser. Maybe the backspace key, but I think everything else has to do with the keyboard or the BIOS, in my opinion.

Could be the keyboard, heat doesn't do good for ribbon cables. But most of the times a keyboard that has to "catch up" with users' actions is doing that because of slow software.
