Hello.
I just bought a new HP dv5130 and from the second I booted it up I noticed it to be rather slow.. Much to slow for the specs that it says it has.
I've noticed that the CPU is taking major load when I right click and goto any option/load nearly any program.
My first thoughts had been a fresh reinstall to battle the nonsense software that was preloaded onto my book, but I would really like to keep this OS on it.
I'm in the process of cleaning out the junk and was just wondering if there was anything I am over looking that is causing the problem, maybe old drivers etc etc?
I feel like I'm running on an old P2 266 and am questioning this notebook.

are you in battery mode? because in battery mode the processor activates the low power mode and underclocks the CPU. try changing the settings from the power control panel.
2>too much bloatware??? -
Right now I'm running at just under 2Ghz and currently jacked into the wall. Its crazy how much lag I have when open a program, opening internet explorer on a test it took about 12 seconds to open and maxed my cpu out.
I'm going to remove all the junk from the system, but I don't think its the junk doing it. A fresh install might be in order, but I just may return it for a new one if it comes down to that. -
My DV5000t had the same problem. I warn you, do not reformat. I tried it, and all the drivers were lost, none of the downloaded ones worked, and it was doomed forever. I suggest you use it for a while, and ask HP for the Operating System disk and the Drivers Disk. Then you can reformat without a problem.
-
I'm not impressed with this at all. Since you also had this problem and a clean start didn't fix it I'm taking it back to the store and exchanging it for a new one.
Is there a fix for this problem, or is it just a bad OS install? -

Hmm, the dv5130 is a Turion ML37 with 1GB of RAM... that most definitely should not be slow. When I bought my dv8125nr (17" version of your notebook) I ripped out Norton (which has degenerated into a bloated resource hog under Symantec's mismanagement) and maybe a few other things. Check the Processes tab in Task Manager and see what processes are consuming significant CPU time.
-
What ever processes are starting up/doing anything they will max out the CPU. I can idle well but if any program is doing anything it will just destory the cpu and max it out.

Hi Raymond,
I have a DV 5130Z and it rocks! I agree with removing the resource sucking Norton from the machine. BTW I start IE in about 3-4 seconds, and that is with more than one copy running. I beleive there is something amiss with your machine. You could try a clean install, but if that doesn't work I would bring it back. You could try running some of hte diagnostic tools that are floating around mem checker etc, but ultimately your's is a new machine and even if you find something wrong it will still have to go to service for repair / replacemnet. -
Maybe it's the HDD which is running slow and causing the CPU to go up. This happened to me when the Transfer mode of the HDD switched to PIO instead of UDMA 5
-
Also if you are coming from a desktop which use faster hard drives some of the lag could be attributed to the slowness of the drive. Perhaps you should look at this.
-
After recovering from the recovery section on my drive my system is running MUCH better. It still isn't as wonderful as my desktop and I've still yet to remove all the ****ware(again :/) but I'm pretty sure that the reinstall fixed it up and with a little more work it should be running smooth.
I know the slower drive is going to effect my machine but if you had seen just how it was running you would have ruled that out just as I have.
All in all things are better, I'll update once more when I get the system up to snuff/write a review when I get enough time. -
I wrote the review for the dv5000z which is the same notebook as the V5000z. It took about 40 seconds to boot.
-
Different CPU in the US model, yes?
Now that things are a bit cleaner it boots much faster. I haven't timed it yet but it is much quicker then the 5+min boot time i had before. -
the u.s. model comes with the turion as well. it might be a different clock speed, though.

My wife recently got a dv5000 but it has a 1.6GHz Intel Core Duo processor. I'm really surprised how nice it is, it's fast as all get out and after about 2 weeks it hasn't had a single hiccup. I especially like the display, its very bright and sharp. Anyway the first thing I did when she got it was to remove all of the excess bloatware and there was a ton. I didn't reformat, I just removed everything from add/remove programs. If you are using Norton Security dump that **** and download the Microsoft OneCare beta 2, it's a full security program including anti virus and you get a 90 day free trial. It works fantastic and doesn't slow down the dv5000 one bit. You can get it from the Microsoft site.

I just bought the same model and it seems to be fine so maybe it's a problem with your specific machine. But as with the others I got rid of Norton and some other preinstalled files. I use AVG, Microsoft Defender, Spybot and Ad-aware. There is a lot of garbage that comes with the machine so just delete the programs you don't need. Hope that helps a little. But maybe try contacting HP too.

Things are running a whole lot smoother now. I removed all the nonsense I didn't need and it feels like I'm getting what I paid for.
Oddly though, after I was done I found that my virtical mouse scroll didn't work. I checked my options and the options for it were thing and it looked like I could select them but when I tried it wouldn't let me tick the box. I uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled them with hopes that things would work more smoothly. Sadly enough the drivers don't seem to work(those provided by HP and Windows auto detection) and I've lost my whole synaptics tab and when I goto my mouse properties I get a Unable to connec to synaptic device error :/ -
I'm a bit surprised people are getting all these problems with their HPs. I never had a major problem with mine other than the memory bay and the stripped screw episode I'd like to forget. I did a reformat as well and installed all the drivers manually; never had a problem with any of the hardware or anything.

Hi Raymond,
Glad you got it worked out. -
Hi All,
I hope somebody can help...I bought my notebook and it crashed after like 3 weeks. After running the PC Recovery disk (didn't do the destructive recovery) I lost my F:/ I put a disk in and it will run but then shuts down. After spending 2 hrs with the tech help at HP we could figure it out...any suggestions? -
Call HP and ask them to replace your defective system.

We are having some problems with our HP Pavilion DV5000 Intel Duo Core. When using Internet Explorer 6 or 7 we cannot get the Disneyworld website to display. Many websites seem to be fail on this laptop. Internet Explorer will crash randomely. Also, when I download files half the time they are corrupt. I first thought it was a bad file. But when downloading the same files on my other system and copying them to the HP dv5000 they work. We were given Media Center 2002 and I think HP should have given us a free upgrade to Media Center 2005. We purchased our laptop in June 2006. I have talked with HP support and all the fixes they gave me to try have failed. I have had some success using Firefox instead of IE but there still seems to be problems. I also have upgraded all the firmware. I'm ready to ask HP to just replace this system. If anyone is having similar issues please respond to this post.

Goto Start --> Run--> Type in "compmgmt.msc" (press enter)
The Computer Management Screen should pop up.
Goto Storage --> Disk Management, Then right click on the icon with the cd and select "Change Drive Letter and Paths". You should notice that there are no drive letters or paths assigned. Goto "Add". Assign a new drive letter and press ok.
Well I hope this helps you and saves many others the stress we've had to go through to fix this problem.
Cheers,

I've a similar problem here. A dv5000 - AMD Turion 64 Mobile, XP Media Edition and 1GB RAM.
This thing runs like an old dog in January. ANY thing snaps CPU to or near %100 utilization and the whole experience crawls to almost a stand still.
Seeing that a wipe and reinstall has helped some, did the same thing. No change at all. Can't say it's worse - but it sure isn't any better.
Any suggestions before I send this slug back to HP?
what a frustrating experience.... -
Well, finally sent this thing back into HP. They threw their hands up in the air and eventually sent out a brand new laptop. Whatever their 'replacement' model for this thing is - it's on it's way!
Man, glad we got the extended warantee. New laptop cuz the DV5000 is a Lemon!
