My father has a x1000. It's an old computer but is more than enough for what he uses it or. The touchpad on the computer is not working. I've tried to reinstall the driver for it, but that didn't work. I checked under device drivers and I don't even know if the computer is recognizing the touchpad.

    Any advice?

hmm, could have several reasons. the touchpad could be dead, or just disabled in bios, or something wrong with the drivers.

if it´s not switched off in bios, you should see it in the hardware manager as either with a yellow sign, that says, there is no driver instralled for this component, or if driver installation was successful, you should see it under input devices.
check the bios and hardware manager first, when searching for the error.

if nothing comes up, the touchpad may be dead.

Don't HPs usually have touchpad on/off buttons? I know it sounds stupid, but check that. Then try it on some other Operating systems to see if it's a driver problem. (You can try anything, some portable linux, or some diagnostics CDs that have a mouse interface.)

To check the bios, restart and press and hold (either F12 or F2) (how could I forget) before it starts to boot until a (usually blue screen) comes up

Vista: ok...right click on my computer...click properties..on the left it will have a column labeled tasks...click device manager..expand mice and other pointing devices...see if it has a yellow exclamation point next to the driver and post back...
XP: Right click my computer....click hardware tab....click device manager....follow same steps above

It should still show up as some sort of unknown device even without the drivers, although I would try installing them just to see what happens........

If the touchpad is not disabled in BIOS, then I would say the hardware is faulty.

Is the device manager the same thing as BIOS?

    no.

the bios contains all hardware settings, and it is not related to windows ( software) it´s plain hardware settings for the machine. At startup you usually have to press one of these buttons ( differs ) F1,F2,F10..... just take a closer look at the screen when the laptop is starting up.

once you have entered the bios, search for the touchpad / pointing device , and if there is a setting for it, make sure you only change that particular setting, nothing else. the bios is nothing to play around with, as you can get some serious trouble with your machine if you don´t know what you are doing.

Ok, well I couldn't find anything in the BIOS about enabling or disabling a mouse. There is nothing in the device manager. And I'm sure that the drivers are installed because I have synaptics processes running in my task manager.

don´t give up already, there might be one thing, don´t know if you have tested that already.

as mentioned earlier in this thread, the x 1000 has a button to switch on or off the touchpad. there should also be a light indicating the touchpad is on.

in the upper right corner of the touchpad there is a light, that indicates the state of the touchpad - on or off.

and the button on top( middle) of the touchpad actually switches it on or off.

    try that one.

and btw. HP does provide manuals for all their compters and laptops :

startup and reference guide : http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00047086.pdf

service and maintenance manual : http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00047479.pdf

    good luck

But it should still show up in Device Manager as a Synaptics PS2 Port Touchpad, reguardless of whether it is on or off........

that should be a hardware switch, so if hardware is turned off, the device simply disappears in the device manager.

Mine doesn't, and neither does my wireless when I turn it off. If it was turned off in BIOS it would not be detected though...........

when you turn wireless off it´s just the radio you turn off, not the hardware.

-> plug and play, was introduced with windows 98, if i remember this correctly.

Perhaps the touchpad still draws some power when switched "off"? On mine, the light changes from blue (on) to orange (off) (which makes me think this is the reason Device Manager still detects it). It also tells me the hardware is working properly, even when it is "off".

that might be different to the x 1000. if the switch disconnects power of the device, and that is possible, it just won´t show up in device manager.

since this x 1000 is some years old now ( 2004 or 2005 i think), it might have such a switch that disconnects the power.

Ah, I understand. Maybe the newer models put it in some sort of "standby" instead of disconnecting power like the old ones....

yep, that´s my guess. but we won´t know for sure, unless this is exactly the problem the op has.

I know about the ON/OFF switch. I made sure that it was ON. That was the first thing I checked. I think it has to dead.

A couple of months ago, the hard drive went bad on the computer. So, I went and bought a new hardrive and replaced it. This was my brother's computer for a few years and he had actually lost the xp disks that were made for it. So, I was forced to use the XP disk I had for my dell dimension. I'm thinking there could be 3 potential issues that are causing this problem.

    1) The hard drive I bought was a WD 80 GB 5200 RPM. The old hard drive was only 4200 RPM. The touchpad sits right on top of the hard drive. So, maybe there was too much heat coming from the new hard dirve and it actually melted something. (Not too sure about this)

    2) There could possibly be an issue with using the dell dimension XP version. However, I don't know if this is the problem because everything else works fine; and the touchpad was working for several weeks after installing the dell version of XP.

    3) Maybe when I was turning the computer upside down to install the hard drive, some wiring with the touchpad got loose. Again, I'm not too sure this since it was working for several weeks after replacing the hard drive.

Now I was checking the service manuals to see how I could get to the touchpad to make sure everything is connected properly. It seems way too involved and I'm afraid if I try it, the computer may never turn on again.

Had the same problem with my X1000 a few months ago. The Left and Right Click buttons are still working. I seldom use it but its my wife's favorite as the screen is lot better than the rest of our family laptops. I bought a wireless Logitech mouse and my wife is happy with the mouse instead of the touchpad.

I have the F.55 BIOS and it does not support the Intel 2200 or 2915 wireless G cards. Anyone knows which BIOS version should I flash to support the Intel 2200G card. Thanks.
