After I received my new HDX16, I noticed a few days later that there are 2 main issues. One is there is a hump or arch where the touch sensitive buttons are. It sticks out where the mute button is. I can even push it back in with my finger but it won't stay in. When I close the lid, it even makes a mark on the screen since it is arched up, touching the screen.

Another issue is with the 5100AGN network card. I have an N router and it does connect to N speeds 150mbs but you have to change settings. However, the connection is never stable. I have since switched back to G.

Because of these issues, it made me doubt the build quality of the HDX16, which is why I started this poll. I am in the process of returning mine and I've already ordered a new one with the 30% coupon. Same specs plus TV tuner and 2 year warranty but $100 cheaper. I will post the build of that 2nd one when I get it.

So the question is. How many of you had issues when you first got your HDX16? Thanks.

I received my HP-HDX16t on Friday 4/23 and it has the exact same problems identified by the originator of this thread. There are couple of humps on the touch sensitive media buttons and the silver rim is not fully flushed around the LED lights for HD, Power and Battery on left corner.

In addition looses the connectivity to wireless very often when on battery. This seems to be an issue with some parts in month of April. Going to exchange it.

Thanks for that info. I am getting my replacement today. I will see if these problems are on my 2nd one. Would suck @ss if it did. The freaking laptop takes almost a month to get here each time.

Both of the HDX16s I have tried (received the new on Friday) have been in good shape. I lose no connectivity to the internet (G connection) and I haven't noticed any bumps...

I just got mine on Friday (4/24), and it crashed on me over the weekend. Windows wouldn't even load in safe mode. It took me a while, but I was able to do a complete system recovery. So yea, I'd say I had a pretty big problem.

My question is, should I return the laptop just in case if this was a hardware issue? (Full disclose: in my excitement of getting a new laptop, I went a bit overboard in torrenting/downloading software/transferring stuff from my external - but I'm 99% sure that everything I was putting on there was safe). It seems to be working fine now, but I don't want this to happen to me again 2 weeks from now when I can no longer exchange it at Microcenter. Any advice/suggestions would be great.

    Thanks,
    neyvit

Thanks for that info seelk. I guess you got lucky. I can't belive how crappy quality control is on these.

@ neyvit. I don't think its a big issue. But to be on the safe side, get a replacement. However, keep in mind the replacement can be better or worse than the first one. Up to you.

I have already sent it back for exchange, i am hoping it was not due to hot screen (ultra bright view) being closed on the cheap plastic silver touch sensitive buttons that did it. We will see on the new one what happens. I still think lot of functionality for the price. Wish could be less plastic and made it a little more solid...like Sony / Dell / Mac...would pay $100 for upgrade to body and keyboard.....

I know what you mean. The hdx16 feels plasticy compared to a Dell. However, it is best deal for the price. Try to keep us updated on the replacement one.

I just got the replacement about an hour ago. Upon 1st inspection, the plastic hump on the touch sensitive bar is not present on this one. Good thing. Overall build quality seems good.

By default its connected to wireless G and is stable so far. Its doing windows updates as I type this on my Toshiba and connection seems stable. I will try to connect to N soon.

I have yet to try the TV tuner but I'll report back my findings.

From what I've read, no you can't exchange it. HP claims this isn't a defect and its customers' fault.

Pl. keep checking if the humps come due over heating since that is plastic. I did not get the humps when i got the laptop, it appeared within 2 days. Keep us posted, i did put in sleep while closing the lid.

I am still waiting for my new one, ordered a new and returned the first one to ensure faster turnaround.

So wait, you're saying that you need a week to inspect the notebook?
Why not just inspect it on-spot the first 5 minutes you got the notebook.
Do you literally need a week to find all the appearance flaws in it?

Geesh- It seems like you really want to find one and make a complain.

Because if appearance looks fine from the initial unboxing, then be satisfied.

I guess, we won't be hearing any moaning and groaning from you about your new notebook unless its something like "heat, growing or "randomly appearing" dead pixels, a noise from internal, fan issues... ) -> OH wait, I'm giving you ideas on what to make future complains after your first week... I'll stop.

Put it this way. There is nothing physically wrong with it from looking. But there could be other things like a cockroach is inside it and stuff. Things like that would take time to show up. It doesn't matter to you anyway cuz you can't exchange/return yours anyway.

I'll go into super detail from what I experienced in the past day. The humps in the touch sensitive bar are not as big as the last one. But when I pushed it with my finger, it would move down and make a popping sound. But you can't see any big humps, maybe really small ones. This doesn't bother me much tho.

When I first unboxed it, I turned it over. The cover underneath with the screws, it was sticking out in 2 parts. I pushed it back in.

When I first started it up, I heard the DVD drive running. I was like ? So I opened it, and there is a copied DVD in it marked 4-12 to 4-15. I played it in my Toshibia. Apparently it was some cultural celebration thing from 2004 in Shanghai from what my Chinese friend could read for me. My guess is they used the DVD to test the dvd drive and forgot about it when they boxed it up. LOLLLllllllll

I was browsing the web downloading firefox and google chrome when suddenly it lost connection. Note that it was connected to wireless G. I had to search for my network and reconnection.

Although you can't change keyboard backlit settings, my 2nd one's light looks alittle low. I asked my friend to compare but she said it looks the same. But I swear my old one was brighter.

I was busy yesterday washing my 2 cars and working out and cleaning my house yet so I didn't have time to freak around much with it.

My last HDX16, I saw the hump immediately and noticed the wireless connection in the 5th day. So I created this post in 1 week after I noticed the issues so yeah. Its going to take me a week cuz I'm too busy to sit down and test for every single crap like bluetooth, dvd burning, lightscribe, finger print reading, game playing etc. However, physically it looks to be without defect.

I'm also kind of hoping to not find any problems with it because it takes about 1 month from build to receive and I don't want to wait that long.

Well I've installed Crysis warhead and played it for an hour. The game auto detected my system and set settings on gamer, which is high. The game lagged a bit and half of the screen when white when there was heavy action.

I don't think this is a system issue because crysis is one of the most demanding games. I suspect it will play smoother on medium settings. I also have fallout 3 and I will test that tomorrow.

Also, the laptop got really hot on the left palm rest. I assume this is where the hard drive is.

Its been about a week since my replacement arrived. So far there is no hump from the touch sensitive bar. The laptop got really hot during Crysis gaming but no deformation has come. Thus I don't think there will be.

I did some minor quality fit issues.

1.The right speaker grill does not fit flush with the body.
2.The indicator lights for the hd, battery, etc, there is a gap between the top and bottom parts of the plastic.
3.My space bar seems to be touching the screen when close. This could result in marks on the screen over time. I will use my keyboard cloth thing that the laptop came with.

Another thing is it got super hot during game play. I had my express card remote in the slot. I took it out after gaming and it was HOT. This could be an issue later as the heat may deform the remote. Best to leave it out during game play.

Overall I think I'm keep this one has it is better build than my last.

I'm having issues with the mute button. My laptop's mute button is always red (muted) although I am able to mute and unmute the sound by pressing it, as the windows taskbar icon also indicates the mute/unmute status. I am however able to hear the sound.

BTW, how can I find if my laptop is HP HDX X16T 1000 or 1100 or 1200.

    Thanks.

No. This issue surfaced right after Windows Update. I did try uninstalling the drivers, but it didn't help.

1000,1100,1200 are the numbers that gets displayed on HP site when you search of HDX16T drivers.

Thank you for your observation. I am still waiting for my replacement, their expedite process they promised is just show off. The laptop just shipped on 5th and i am hoping i get by Sat (if fedex delivers). The fit is issues on not sitting flush seem to be very common now. I had the same issues near the HDD lights.

The next question i have is on the owners lounge i saw lot of people talking about wireless dropping off and i had this problem when not connected to the power supply. Are you having the wireless disconnecting intermittently.

Yes fit and finish seems to suck on the hdx16. I get a stable connection when connected to wireless G. But with N, I'd lose connection once a day. Once lost, it couldn't even find any networks even tho there are 10 around me. I'd have to reboot to reconnect.

However, I have not tried wireless N on my replacement. But G seems stable at the moment.
