Ok, I have said this in other posts, but my boot time is around 3 min and my shutdown is long as well, I checked the "performance Monitor" and this is a quick snapshot of what I get. I just cleared it out and then did a restart. it is always showing either warnings as well as Critical. Vista what a joy.. Any suggestions??

I have no experience with Vista.
Have a look at the How to Optimize a Notebook Computer guide (but note that it was writen for Windows XP so I do not know what applies to Vista).
Also run anti-spyware, anti-virus, registry cleaner and defragment your hard drive.
That's what I would do on an XP system. The main thing to optimize the boot time would be to go in msconfig and prevent the unneeded program from starting on start up.

Sorry I can't be much help since I don't know much about Vista.

Thanks for the info, Since this is vista I am wondering if there are "Other Issues"
like drivers and such going on. Like one critical error said it had something to do with Microsoft audio. just wondering anyone else with vista has a bunch of errors in there performance logs as well.

My shutdown takes over 6 minutes since Vista!!
Boot is faster than XP but I have issues on waking from sleep or hibernate. Installed most hot fixes but still having issues....Guess only SP1 can help - COME SOON PLEASE!!

If the boot up takes this long, it must be loading up something from the hard drive or trying to initialize a device or driver. I'm not sure about Vista, but this is usually the way to tell in XP.

1.) Does it stay that long for booting up in safe mode? If no, then it's because it's loading up a file or initializing a driver/device. If yes, then it might have something to do with your hardware (memory, harddrive, etc).
2.) Is Vista itself actually slow (is it slow during normal usage)? The will tell you whether it is just boot up and shutdown.
3.) Try the normal disk scan and defrag (but it's probably not these)
4.) Run memtest86+ to check to make sure your memory is ok.
5.) Use some utilties to make sure all your hardware is getting recognized properly, for example your ram should be operating at its normal speed.
6.) Get the SMART data for your hard drive and run a drive fitness test (usually a software from your hdd maker, like WD has Life Diagnostic Tools and Hitachi has DFT).

There are more, but htis is probably a good place to start.

    Best of juck! ^^

@ ruibing, Thank you for the reply..

    1. boots up nice in safe mode
    2. no, it chugs right along. I have 1 gig of ram, but I just bought 2 1 gig sticks (Hp loves putting 2 512's in there) coming in a few days from newegg
    3. thats all fine, vista does it automatically now ;)
    4. mem has no issues, but getting more ram as mentioned above
    5. all hardware seems good. (I should also mention, i had xp on here before with no problems) did a clean install of vista.
    6. hard drive passed all tests.

conclusion.. it's something with vista, I just checked my other desktop, and it also has boot up errors and shutdown errors in the logs as well. I am willing to bet that everyone with vista has there warnings in there performance logs. o well, i just wont ever shut down the lappy. It's no wonder that Microsoft wants you to use sleep instead of shutdown.. thanks again

I have the exact same issue, log filled with shutdown and boot up errors. I'm on a 6000T with 2gig ram and a T5600 and it takes me about the same time as you to boot up. The system is very responsive otherwise.

If its fine in safe mode, then its just trying to initialize something. Was it like this as soon as you got it, or after you used for awhile? This will tell us whether you installed something or other. Try disabling startup programs. Try disabling hardware's through device manager, especially things like sound.

Make sure you do this one at a time so you know whose the culprit.

    Best of luck! ^^

Sleep keeps the memory powered up in the state it was when you suspended the laptop. It can stay as long as there is power to keep that state.
Hibernation places a snapshot of that memory on the drive, thus allowing power / battery to be completely removed with ability to rebuild the image once switched on.

Both modes avoid the need to boot the operating system - that is to initialize the hardware, load from scratch all drivers and configuration files in a certain required order etc, in other words - the boot process...
