I currently own an HP dm1z and I want to replace the Fn key combos with different actions.

Currently HP has (imo) wasted keys on:

    • F1 key has Fn of ? (help)
    • F5 key has Fn that launches web browser (great for grandparents who are scared of computers, maybe)
    • F6 key has Fn of previous/rewind
    • F7 key has Fn of play/pause
    • F8 key has Fn of next/forward

My last netbook (Acer) had a Fn key combo to turn off the backlight on the lcd screen, and it had a Fn key combo for putting the computer into sleep mode. I miss these abilities. I can put my computer into sleep with a few key presses, but the ability to black out the screen by turning off the backlight is sorely missed.

Is there any program or alteration that can be made to change the Fn function on these particular keys?

I did find a program that someone made for HP notebooks that shuts off the LCD backlight. But, it's a bit flaky, and won't function while playing games that change the screen resolution.

    I appreciate your feedback

    Thank you for the suggestion.

I was reading the manual for KeyTweak and found:

Bummer. I'll try it out and see what I can get it to do.

    Thanks again.

Well at First it doesn't say All laptops.
Second. It also says that can not change button play/pause because it has 3 bit code or smth.
Third. I changed Fn+F2 on my VAIO F from mute to Calculator and changed Play/Pause button to Volume Up. Surprise! See why I told you that I use this program? :)

Yeah. There's really no way to remap the Fn combo keys unless it was a setting in the bios so you could assign different functions.

I'm stuck with these wasted buttons for now... till someone comes up with a solution (hopefully).

I wanted to know what program you found for HP that allows you to turn off backlit (LCD)? And I will try to find others as well
