Possibly a mistake and they might change the price as they did with some of the HDX16t's things. But it might not be... go for it now or possibly wait for a better GPU... Who knows, they might implement one. Honestly the HDX16t/HDX18t deserve better GPU's.

Or perhaps they made a deal with Intel which stipulates that since it can't be overclocked in HP computers, we can't charge our customers for an unavailable feature.

    :D

Wow, that's cheap. I would love to see how much the BIOS allows it to overclock and overvolt.
They probably might use a different motherboard and BIOS for it.

^ And where is the QX9300 available as Retail ?

Nope, can't be overclocked. HP doesn't go for that. It's even on their website. click help me decide and read carefully.

Gaah !! That pricing is totally preposterous.
Anyway, you'll see them on ebay after a month of so for ~$300 or so.
And they are not Retail, they are OEM. :)

That's sad. No wonder its so cheap. They probably would have been better off, offering the Q9100 as an option.

Would there be anything stopping someone from swapping out the QX9300 in this machine with, say, the Montevina P8600 or T9400 from another notebook (that also supports the QX9300)?

The motherboard has to support it, and the laptop has to have enough power for it.
And changing the CPU will void the warranty.

I would not care much about voiding the HDX's 1 year warranty. I would like to know whether it would be easy enough to swap out the HDX's cpu with, for ex. an OCZ 17" whitebook CPU (which does support the qx9300 btw). Would half of both notebooks have to be disassembled to get to the CPUs/ would extracting and re-applying thermal paste be extremely difficult and messy?

Also, once the qx9300 was swapped into the OCZ it should be overclockable (so long as the OCZ has the thermals/voltage for overclocking) right?

    Thanks for the help!!

You will probably have to do a moderate amount of dissembly. It shouldn't be too difficult, then again that depends on your experience in working with laptops and desktops. I've taken apart several laptops to reapply thermal paste. If you've had any experience with building desktops and using thermal grease there, it would definitely help. Applying thermal paste for the first time can be tricky. Just find a service manual and thermal paste guide and follow the steps carefully.

note: when people say it cant be overclocked, they mean that the MB/bios wont allow it, but there is no HW on the CPU itself that it keeping it from being OCed. the qx9300 on another platform should OC.
