How is the quality of these laptops? My old networking teacher told me to stay away from compaqs because of their bad quality. My parents owned an old p3 compaq desktop, and it was nice. I wanted to look into one of these, but their unknown quality is what makes me hesitant.

Compaq and HP have virtually the same build quality - it's not top of the line but it is well above average, especially for the low price you pay.

If you are paying $700 for a notebook you can't expect top quality. If you are looking for good quality in a lower pirced machine, I would suggest the ThinkPad R series.

Your old networking teacher is behind the times..
Compaq used to have bad quality, but now its pretty darn good.
I got a Compaq v4000t and couldn't be happier with it.

I had a compaq evo n800c that ran for 3.5 years. Only reason I replaced it is it started dying every now and then on me, and I couldn't have that while working on a thesis.

I replaced it with a presario v5000z, and it feels sturdy enough.

Compaq desktop/notebooks used to be horrid. Hp has alwasy been decient, but since the new chasi has came out for the compaq (v2000,v4000 etc) the build quialty is high up there. They have a bad name because there a big brand and have been around for awhile. But dont be shy, the compaqs are very very nice. Anyone that has owned one of the newer compaqs will not complain

i would say dell xps 140's built quality is better than a compaq v2000's built quality.

HP does have somewhat better quality than Dell's.
