I own a HP DV9823ca and the hard drive makes noise and i hope its nothing bad. Like i hear it trying to seek all the time like it runs perfectly but you hear a small seeking noise all the time.
Is the hard drive ok? I ran a western digital hard drive test and it passed.
So anyone that knows alot about hard drives let me know.
Thanks.

What OS do you have? Have you tried HDTune's test? It sounds like your computer is just frequently accessing the HDD. Do you have indexing enabled or restore points?
-
I got vista and i havent tried this hd tune test and i dont have retore points and i dont know if i got the indexing. Do I need the indexing on? Is it good to have it on or off?
-
If disk indexing is like it is in XP, it is supposed to help people that use the built in search function. However, I'm not sure if this applies to Vista. To see (in XP) if it's on: right click Local Disk under My Computer -> Properties -> Allow Indexing Service. If no one is able to give you a solid answer, you should make a post in the hardware thread. Again, I'm thinking everything is okay.

Check under Health if it shows and then run an error scan. -
Well I finally had the indexing done but the drive still makes noise as if its looking for something. Its not like a huge noise just a small rumble every so often.
Now im running HD tune which said OK Health but im running that error checker now. -
If it's just a small noise, it's nothing. If something was wrong, it would usually sound like a loud clicking and it would definitely show up in a HD health scan.
-
Oh talk about loud clicking i went to a computer store and they assured me of an external hard drive that will hold a 750gb external drive so i put it in and it was making clicking noises and no where on the box and manual does it say how much the drive can handle. I demanded they exchange everything for a different brand drive and different external hard drive and so far no problems. So I know what a clicking noise sounds like and this sounds more like seeking or trying to find something.
But im still waiting on the hdd tune to finish scanning. -
Hey well i did a google search and came up with some sites that talk about disabling some sorta windows search service and i did that but it doesnt work. Some people say it doesnt make the seeking noise but it starts up again and others say it stops it for good.
Does anyone else have a HP laptop that is making alot of seeking noises? I know i cant be the only one. -
I found something on the net http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/...ws-vista-search-indexer-and-indexing-service/ im visiting a friend right now so i will give it a try and see if it stops the search indexing.
-
So I tried this and even though i dont see the word searchindexer on my windows task manager but the hard drive wont stop seeking. I let others try this as well but it doesnt work really.
I know my hard drive is fine its just something is making it seek constantly. -
How long have you had this laptop?, I gather its brand new going by the model. Since its new maybe its updating in the back ground, antivirus scanning in the background, even Windows defender.
I know when mine was new it seemed to be busy a lot. (DV9774). I turned indexing off and that helped. -
I've turned off the indexing since thats what i read on another site that I should do. It still makes a noise here and there.

Its superfetch. Try disabling it to see if yields better results for you
Start > type services.msc > look for Superfetch > Stop the service > Disable it from startup.
If it doesnt work and makes your system run slow then turn it back on
