I am looking to purchase a HP nc8430 and my father wants to wait until next month to order one but the one that I am looking at the: nc8430 (EY688AA) for $1750 is a Smart Buy which means that its $250 off the original price which was like $2000. The offer ends at the end of this month...my dad says he wants to risk it...but I am paying for half of this laptop and I do not really want to end up paying more money. So my question is will they have a different offer after this current Smart Buy ends? I know if it was Dell they would replace the promotion with a different offer. Is this true for HP?

i'd wait a month. 2 would probably be better, as the Merom intro = further drop in current Core Duo prices. but i'm guessing you need one before school?

If you need the notebook now, get it now as even when you wait for the new Merom notebooks, new ones will be waiting for you sooner or later.

Considering Merom is a socket-compatible processor, I doubt the cuts in price will be that dramatic. A 2.0 Core Duo processor costs $320 retail on Newegg, and Merom won't make the current platform itself obsolete, so the best I would expect Core 2 would do is cut maybe $100 - $150 off the price.
Pressumably they would have some other promotion, but who knows if its one you want.
The biggest factor though would be how long you intend to keep the machine. The longer you plan on keeping it, the less significant a $100-250 difference in price will mean. -
blazin I just got a smart buy HP nc8430.....the one with 1gb ram, 2.0 yonah, 80gb, etc....and it is definately a nice machine
nothing better then playing BF2 @ 1680x1050 with the settings jacked and having no stuttering at all....on my couch
there was a 100 buck mail in offer if you purchased from the 28 to the 30 of june so you missed that...it put the price of mine right around 1500. In any case pagecomputers offers this config for 1575 with free shipping...that is currently the lowest price I can see. I got mine from costcentral but they recently jacked up their pricing to 1650+ for no apparent reason so page is the lowest. 1750 is a lot to pay for it when you can get it for 1575 shipped so I thought I'd mention it.

again I wouldn't buy from HP....my reseller said that it still has a 3yr warrenty with HP so there really was no reason to for me, save your cash
