I bought a dv9500t about 1,5 year ago. Luckily for me I also went with the 2yr Care Pack.

A week ago my GPU failed on me. Unfortunately this happened while I'm abroad for university. Now I have to send my laptop back to the US so HP can service the thing. Trying to cut down on shipping costs, I want to send only the laptop w/o the HDD's (x2), battery and PSU.

The Care Pack only covers the country where it was purchased in, and the 1yr world-wide warranty obviously expired 6 months ago.... go figure.

So my question is, can I keep my HDD's, and PSU and only ship the laptop ?

I tried calling HP about this and all I found out is that they won't help me because I'm in the EU, not the US, where essentially (in their strange way of thinking) the laptop should be, because people don't travel in the XXI Century. If I would say, that I am in the US, they'd only schedule an appointment with a representative... That's why I'm hoping to get an answer here :)

    Thanks,
    Mvtt

    hi mvtt
well, i can´t tell you very much about the standard warranty of hp´s consumer notebooks. the business models do have a three year worldwide warranty. about the care packs well dunno that.

but for question, at least when it comes to the business models, they do not require the hdd ( seems a very common thing that business people don´t give their data away )

afaik for your gpu problem it is not necessary to send in the power adapter and the hdd´s. you should use the web portal to start a warranty repair process.

    http://itrc.hp.com

you need to login / register and after that you can start a repair process

once you have done that hp will give you a service number and you can see what hp does in your case, and you can also leave messages about your concerns ( sending in the hdd, power adapter...)

the people at hp will see your questions and they will reply to you...

start that repair process and tell them you won´t be able to send in the hdd´s , the power adapter and the notebook battery. see what happens on their side. guess it won´t be a big deal.

    good luck mate

No problem if you're sure the problem is not related to these components. A depot technician always has these necessary parts to troubleshoot. If the problem happens to be software related, they'll return it without repair.

Finally shipped my laptop to the US. No technician was needed. HP will send a return package so they can repair the hardware failure.

Thank you schoko and beut. Indeed the they don't need the HDDs. The kind lady made a note that the laptop will be w/o battery, charger and hdds.

    Thank you agian :)

You can keep your hard drive. If my laptop ever breaks i keep my hard drive when i send it in. And they only require the battery and charger if it has trouble with power. Example being you cant get it to boot up or it dosent charge the battery.

I don't want to start a new thread, so I'll just post here.

I received a message today that HP is shipping my fixed laptop back to my dad. But they didn't mention what they fixed (I know the problem, but I want them to tell me what they did)! I have a case number, but I don't know where I can type it in on their web page.

BTW, thanks to ever for the help.

A online tech agent may be able to look up what was replaced. I believe when you get the computer back here will be a repair slip with notes on what was done also.
