I doubt you'll need drivers for your machine other than possibly graphics, which probably will be available with the download. You should try the LiveCD. My guess is that everything will work immediately.

Everything was fully functional already when i installed ubuntu on my dv2500 . No need any drivers at all unless you wanna enable advanced graphics like compiz-fusion.

As said above, try the Live CD first

    Good post, flipfire.

@OP: actually installing the drivers is even easier than those instructions make the process seem. A little icon shows up after installation; it says something like, "click to enable third-party video drivers." (I don't remember the exact wording) The entire process takes about a minute or so.

No, you don't need fat32. Ubuntu can read/write to NTFS partitions. If you want Windows to be able to read/write to ext3 partitions, use http://www.fs-driver.org/.

As for drivers, on my dv9700t, everything worked automatically except the graphics card, and that's because the driver is proprietary. After installing the driver, I did have to make a modification to xorg.conf to get the DPI correct. I can post the fix I used if you run into that problem.
