I looked this up and it shows the max memory of 2 gig.

Have you guys heard of putting in 2X2 gig to go to 4 gig of ram?

    Found the maintenance guide:

    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01311536.pdf

    (page 5-12, section 5.6)
I find it strange that the parts for Intel models list only the 1GB and 512MB models, whereas the AMD-based platforms have the 2GB listed. I'm almost positive a decent number of the dv92xx shipped with 4GB installed.

If they were anything like my DV6000 of that time, there was a BIOS update to allow use of 4GB ram.

That service manual was probably made when there was no 2GB so-dimms widely available to even test if they worked.

Besides the manual it self is for dv9000 and dv9200 series, not dv9400 which has even newer components and updated compatibility list.

It's all that matters. Yours is 3 generations newer than first dv9000 that was produced. All those generations share some parts with each other, especially the "dv9000" sticker in the display corner.

You should be able to get full 4GB, just update latest bios and install the dimms. Older Intel Chipsets had issues with large amounts of ram, I don't know what is used in the dv9400-series and I'm too lazy to find out ;) I believe yours is newer than those affected.

I upgraded to 4 gigs with Vista and upgraded to Seven with no problem on my DV9727cl.

    dv9408nr specifications

You have an AMD version so it definitely supports 4GB. I upgraded my parents' dv9208nr to 4GB. I recommend Crucial brand memory for this particular series.

Crucial's website says 2 gig is the max, but I also know that sometimes you can add it anyway and the machine will accept it.

Do you guys know if this particular model would have that ability?

I dont honestly want to purchase the ram if it really wont work. But you never know. Thought I would ask anyway.

They get this information from HP. It's the "official" maximum, as bigger amounts have not been officially tested and verified to work.
