    Hi All,

I recently got into the HDX family due to the incredible pricing of these machines. I have a few questions which you may or may not be able to answer but in a population like this I bet there are at least a few people who can help. Anyways, straight to the questions:

    1. Does anybody have a service manual on the HDX 18t?
    2. To add a second hdd on it we not only need a caddy but also need a converter from sata to what ever the plug is on the mobo of the computer. There is no Sata port on the computer for the additional hdd instead there is a small jack looks like an esata port where an adapter is required from sata to that port.
    3. Can the cpu be replaed without an BIOS update. I would like to put a x7800 on this machine so that it can show its real power. Once I replace the CPU, do you know if it will allow me to use the higher multipliers other than the stock one?
    4. I know the disucssions going on about getting the GPU overclocked on the dv5 and dv7 series and as of yet nobody was successful. I tried to OC the GPU via RivaTuner but altough everest can read the new clocks I set at the level 3 of the GPU, it does not seem to work in real applications like 3dmark. Is there a way to set which level ( as described in everest) the GPU is running?
    5. IS there a way to get both analog and digital tv channels to be displayed in the channel line up through the internal tv tuner. It can find a display both digital and analog channels when I change the settings between eachother but not both sets of channels at the same time. Am I missing somehting?

    I appreciate any help.

    Thanks

Well you are wrong. X7800 is compatible with the hdx 18t. The current issue with the new platform and the CPUs is, the new CPUs won't work in the older platform (ie Santarosa). But the old CPUs like Penry works on the new Montevia chipset. Trust me, I did it so many times.

So. What is the best processor I can swap in for my current setup? We both have the Montevia chipset. DV7T & HDX18T

Definition of best can be wider than you think but here is the breif market:

    1. qx9300=quadcore cpu with 2.5ghz clock speed. Fast and great for software that can use all 4 cores
    2. x9100=dual core but has a clock speed of 3.06ghz. Best cpu for mobile computers if you want to use it for gaming etc
    3. p9500= Dual core with a clock speed of 2.5 ghz. Very low power consumption and heat. Pretty fast but not as fast as the x9100
    4. x7800= Fast and overclockable and dirt cheap. If the bios allows it it can be overclocked to 3.0ghz and you can grab one for couple hundred bucks from ebay. Generates alot more heat and draws more power than even the quadcore cpu.
5 What ever you have on your system since it is free.

    No.

Or may be. It all depands on the bios you have. DV7t has the new montevia chipset which supports the quadcores but your bios and mobo may not be capable of running it.

BIOS? Dam. What about just a high-performance duo core? I have a T9400. Would the T9500 be the fastest available for me?

You can put a x9100 which is at 3.06ghz but did you ever check the service guide to see how to replace the cpu on the dv7t. It can take you a whole day to get it done. And at the end of the day there is no guarantee that it will work.

I've been looking over the manual at the process. Detailed, but doable.

The biggest problem with CPU upgrades is, you can not test if your upgrade works or not untill you put the computer back together. Anyways. GL on that and I will try doing a similar thing with the 18t once the manual comes out.

ANYBODY HAS ANY ANSWER TO MY INITIAL QUESTIONS!!!

    2. I don't have an answer to your question but I plan to buy the HDX 18t myself and I found this information very interesting.Thank you.
I suppose that if I buy this notebook with two HDD's already installed by HP there shouldn't be a problem. It will have the caddy and the converter, right?
So it would be just a matter of swapping the drives right?I plan to install a SSD drive in the near future on one caddy leaving the HDD on the other caddy for storage.

Are the HDX 18t's, with two HDD's shipped by HP, configured in RAID?

    3. I doubt that it will accept the X7800 without a BIOS update. The X CPU series is considered a total different family so I suppose that you need a specifically supported BIOS.
You should have a better chance with the T9600 or P9500 ;)

Yes, if you buy it with two hdds it will come with those adapters but I don't know about RAID setup. I would really like to see someone with two hdds configuring the raid setup so that we can see what is availbale.

I am pretty sure that x7800 will work on it but the question is will it overclock? New gateways asus lappy and even toshibas work with the x7 series cpus.
