    Hi,
I am new in the lappy world. Just got a dv4270 with 1G RAM. I have two questions.

    1. The cooling fan starts up every 1-2 mins. Is that normal?

    2. The screen is dimmer when using the battery than AC power. Is that normal too?

    Thanks for advice.

I can answer the second question. Yes the screen dims automatically when on battery to decrease power consumprion and increase battery life. If you want the screen to be at max brightness then increase/decrease it by pressing the Fn F7/F8 buttons.

What are you doing with the computer when the cooling fan starts up?

same thing here :)the fan goes on and off every 2 minutes. However, my wife owns dv4040us (1.73Ghz with gma900) and most of the time the fan is on.:hp:

nope :), not a problem at all. it takes some time to get used to it ;) I also tried underclocking with NHC (notebook hardware control) , but then the fan never turns itself off. So, leave it as it is :)

p.s. what's your video card? ATI or Intel?

I'm postive his model has the Intel GMA 900 graphics, I've just noticed now that my fan seems to come on a lot also when I'm just web surfing, but it rarely bothers me.

Yeah, so far only custom order DV4000s from HP can have ATI graphics, currently, all DV4000s sold in stores have Intel GMA 900 graphics.
