Hi everybody, new user here. I am almost ready to buy a custom dv2700t, with following:

    2.5GHz Penryn Core 2 Duo
    nVidia 8400GS
    3Gb RAM
    250Gb HD

It is either this laptop, or Dell XPS1330. This is about $200 cheaper, but I have two concerns - heat/noise and weight/bulkiness. And of course a battery question...

I need a laptop that is really quiet. I sometimes bring work to bed, and my wife won't be too happy if she hears a fan going mad at 1am :) I currently have a Dell D610, and while the fan will turn on once in a great while, it is virtually silent. How is the fan on the dv2700? Can I assume that I can use it for light web surfing, MS Excel and Word, with the fan off or virtually silent?

I also hope that the Penryn chip with its 45nm technology should be cooler than the 2.0GHz+ older 65nm parts, right?

Finally, how heavy is the laptop with the 12-cell battery, and how does it feel in your hand? I need at least a 4 hour battery life, so I don't think a 6 cell can do even on max battery setting. I noticed that I can get a high-capacity 6 cell battery though - does that improve the battery life significantly?

    Thanks for any help!

Mines pretty silent, it only kicks in when the cpu reaches 50c or more. You will notice it abit but it wont actually bother you.

Yes they are cooler. Its one of their main advantages from the previous Merom chips

I dont think any 6 cell notebook these days can pull off 4 hours, maybe with super power settings. The 12cell should last you 3-6hours though depending on your power manangement settings

The Hi-cap 6 cell has 20% more capacity than the standard 6cell

I would also buy the ram somewhere else like newegg.com, take the lowest amount of ram that HP offers.

HP overcharges for ram, you can get 4gb ram for $60 almost.

Thanks guys, I placed the order this morning. I hope it works out :) I know about the RAM being cheaper elsewhere, but I had to get the order over $1299 in order to qualify for 30% off, so I went with 3Gb. Not like 32-bit OS can use much more than that anyway...

Now just have to wait for it to be built and shipped :)
