I have a V2000(Z?) with an AMD Sempron 1600Mhz CPU.

After doing some research, I purchased off ebay an AMD Turion 64 MT-30 (1.6Ghz). Since both are socket 754, I thought it was compatible. Not to mention, HP sells this model with a Turion 64.

In any case, CPU upgrading is easy on this model. Just a bunch of screws, off comes the bottom and remove the heatsink and CPU.

Problem is, when I put the MT-30 into the V2000, and turn it on, the power light comes on for about 1 second then turns off. Basically, the PC doesn't ever come up.

Can anyone confirm if this CPU is compatible? Did I get a bad CPU?

If it's not compatible, what is that would give much better performance and is a drop-in replacement?

    Thank you!

going sideway and upgrade, an athlon a64 3000+ might work - watch out for some heating.

other than that u might want to try the bios used in a turion model and see if it accepts the turion processor that u bought

    cheers ...

I'm really looking for cool and energy efficient, which is why I chose the MT-30 (25 watts but 1MB cache).

Not sure how to do the BIOS...put the SEMPRON back in, download the BIOS (if there were a different one for Turion), and install it (if it would let me), then if it didn't work, I'm screwed, cuz now my BIOS is a Turion BIOS and my Sempron might no longer work!

updating bios can be precarious, but if u do it correctly it would let u reflash with no issue - but true, u do it at ur own risk!

    cheers ...

Well, I could have gone either way at the time...faster clock speed with Sempron (but low 256KB cache), or same clock speed, but 4x the cache of the Sempron on the Turion 64 (1MB cache).

Given what was available at the time on ebay, I chose the MT-30 processor, instead of a faster Sempron.

At this point, I'm just trying to confirm whether or not the MT-30 should work! If it should, do I need a new BIOS first, or is my MT-30 just broken? I'm just trying to get a confirmation on compatibility....

    Thanks for the info, btw...

u mentioned that hp/compaq is selling the same model with a turion, so i am betting that it is a matter of bios update.

    cheers ...

Compaq V2000z, as in the 14" ATI Radeon 200m chipset model of a couple years ago right?

I replaced the Sempron in mine with a Turion ML37 successfully, after updating to the latest BIOS. It's entirely possible that your Turion is of a newer stepping that your current BIOS doesn't recognize, which would result in the behavior you describe. It's possible that your notebook is rejecting your Turion because it is a MT series but that's very unlikely, it's the same core as the ML just with lower voltage defaults. PowerNOW! might break, in which case use RMClock or CrystalCPUID to manage power in WinXP, but that's the only annoyance I'd expect.

It's also possible that the chip is simply bad, has a bent/broken pin, was zapped by static electricity, etc. You did remove the battery before doing this upgrade I hope? If not, you might have fried something. The HP service guide documents this critical step.

Thanks for the suggestions...Yes, I did remove the battery during the disassembly process. I've inspected the Turion MT-30, and it looks pristine.

I did put the Sempron back in and fired up Windows, then did an update to the latest BIOS (F37). Shut it back down, and replaced the Turion back in, and still, when I push the power button, nothing happens (the power light stays lit for about 1 sec then turns off).

My guess is I have a bad CPU. :(
