Right now my Compaq V2000 laptop has two memory slots with 256 MB each for a total of 512 MB.

Can I just replace one slot with one 1 GB so I end up with a 1GB and a 256 MB?

or would it be better to have both slots occupied by the same memory capacity?

Having the same type of mem in the same type of slots usually enables most systems to use Hyperthreading, Im not sure you'd be missing out on a lot though. One thing is certainly true; thou shall upgrade!

It better for your Compaq to have 2 of the same stick because it uses dual channel and some HP notebooks wont boot w/ 1 stick or 2 of a different kind.

Do you know the max amount of RAM your notebook can handle?

You can use use 2 sticks of different size. It wont enable dual channel but its not totally necessary and its benefits are limited for most users. What version/year V2000 do you have? If its one of the earlier versions then it didn't even have dual channel support.

Hyperthreading is based on the processor. It has nothing to do with RAM.

I believe that laptop uses DDR and not DDR2 and maximum memory is 2gb.

Depends, the earlier models with Pentium M's shipped with DDR memory and later models usually Sonoma & Core Duo based ones shipped with DDR2. They also sold these with Turions. So, whether it uses DDR or DDR2 depends on the model/year/type of V2000 the OP has.

This laptop is from 2005, you are correct: it uses DDR not DDR2 and max memory is 2gb or 1gb in each slot.

I am thinking about buying a new, faster laptop next year but in the meantime wanted to increase the RAM by spending $35 for a 1gb stick rather than $20 apiece for 512 MB.
