So my mom is going to buy me the hp dv5t and I have a question about the screen res. If I order the screen with the WXGA 1280x800 can I change the res on the laptop to anything higher to make my icons smaller?

No, the resolution described is the maximum number of pixels the monitor can display.

Obviously not, the native resolution is 1280x800, that's the highest it'll go to. But in Vista, the icons on the desktop can be made smaller by holding "Shift" and scrolling the mouse or vertical scroll down button the mousepad.

what he said. unless you're proficient at hacking video drivers, you won't be able to display more than 1280x800.
