With QuickPlay, you have to update to the latest 3.6 version - there are a few 3.6 sub-versions before it will show the 3.7 version.

QuickPlay will only show the next version update, not the latest update. I tried once to update the 3.2 base installed version to a 3.6 version 2 versions up (already downloaded earlier), instead of the one mentioned in the upgrade/update screen. I thought it would save time, but the installlation file said I didn't have the correct requisite for the update.

Annoying! Why do these programmers always take features away and not add the ones you want?!? I like the way 3.6 would let you change if you wanted certain options or not (ie subtitles) WITHOUT interupting/pausing the DVD.

And why is it so hard to include the amount of time left on a movie?

As much as I am not impressed by Windows Media Player, at least these two features work the way I want them.

the time bar is at the bottom of the screen.... under the buttons and in yellow. The 'i' button on the remote will bring up the subtitle option.

    updated to 3.7 this afternoon.
doesn't seem like a big improvement so far, aside from a slight redesign of the user interface.
I'm not a big fan of the media center programs though. they just lack too many options. I like to be able to mess around with my software configuration, optimize it, etc., but QuickPlay or Windows MCE configuration options are laughable at best.

I am having an issue with Quickplay after updating to Quickplay 3.7. Quickplay 3.6 as it came on my PC was working well and then I updated to 3.7 just because it was a newer version, no other reason.

When I updated the 3.7 software said it had to remove 3.6 to proceed. During the install of 3.7 the install said installing HP DVD 3.7. After the update all references in the Vista start menu to HP Quickplay were gone and I was left with DVD Play with the QuickPlay icon next to it. I no longer have a Quickplay interface where it used to allow me to select from Movies, Karaoke, DVD, etc. from a Quickplay screen.

I tried re-installing Quickplay 3.6 from the software restore partition and also from the "HP QuickPlay Web Update" software for my notebook but in all cases I get the following when trying to install: “HP Quickplay / DVD Play – InstallShield Wizard”, “Welcome to the InstallShield Wizard, the IntallShield Wizard will install DVD Play on your computer”.

In the Program Files folder I have a HP\QuickPlay folder but no file brings up Quickplay, only DVD Play.

From what I can tell QuickPlay is not installed, the QuickPlay button doesn’t function (it used to) but that is not the main problem. I am out of ideas. I have googled and searched notebook review for help but I am at a stand still. Any ideas would be appreciated. I am currently at DVD 3.6 and although I don’t use QuickPlay much I just hate when a previous working program has blown up and I can’t get it working again.

why don't you try reinstalling the QuickLaunch buttons as well, maybe the QuickPlay button will work again.
if not, you can always restore your system to a previous state using the windows system restore utility on the control panel

Sorry, I edited my post above, the menu item is DVD Play. I used to have a Quickplay reference which when opened had within it DVD, Karaoke, Movies, etc. That is gone and replaced with DVD Play. I tried a restore to a previous date and it brought back the Quickplay item in the menu list but clicking on it does nothing. I can't get Quickplay re-installed on my system no matter what I do. I am not doing a full system restore, as long as I can play a DVD once in a while I will live with it the way it is. I wonder if a particular file in the QuickPlay program needs to be registered and is not?

just get the QuickPlay software from the HP driver page for your notebook. That is the latest version 3.6, I think and it should fix the links.

It doesn't fix the problem. I mentioned I tried that in the 3rd paragraph of my post. I took a look on HP's Pavilion Forums and found a few references to the same problem during the last year with updates to QuickPlay leaving the user with only DVD Play. There were no fixes except one person who corrected the problem by doing a full factory re-install. I am not willing to do that at this time. Thanks for the suggestions. I did find a file in the QuickPlay folder called reg.cmd which registers all the .dll files but that didn't do any good either.

When I click on QP.exe in the file folder or QuickPlay on the menu I get a quick flash of the QuickPlay circular arrow and nothing more happens.

you are talking about this update on the HP website?

    HP QuickPlay Web Update 01-2008 3.63 A 177.68M

    -------------

Personally, I updated from the 3.2 version via the update links in QuickPlay.

I there is a link to the HP package to reinstall version 3.2 and then update from there.

OK, I did this and it shows a 176 meg update.. I'm DL it now. Did you uninstall 3.2 first or did you just execute the 3.7 over the 3.2 install?

What I did was install the update from within QP update page.
    3.2 -> 3.6.1 -> 3.6.3 -> 3.7

So you updated in sequence.. three updates?

I opened the update within quickplay itself and it gave me the 3.7 link to DL.

Edit: Oops, I just realized that your reply might not have been directed to me. Oh well I will let my post stand and not delete it as it does contain some info about what I have done.

Yes, that is correct. That is also the version that came pre-installed on my HP notebook which was made in February 2008. Ver 3.2 was never on my notebook. The only upgrade path from QuickPlay was via upgrade to ver 3.7. I have uninstalled 3.7, re-installed 3.63, again installed 3.7, re-installed 3.63 both from the HP Website and from my recovery partition but no go, the only working program that gets installed is DVD Play 3.6 or 3.7.

I have tried installing, uninstalling, both versions from Windows normal operating mode and Safe Mode with no difference. It appears something in the registry may be blocking the full install although the install completes with no error messages. The QuickPlay directory appears to have the full QuickPlay program in it but if I execute QP.exe, DVD Play appears on the screen, not the QuickPlay frontend.

No, not the time elapsed, the time that is left before the DVD ends. That option has not been included with Quick Play. As for the i button...I never use the remote since the laptop is sitting right next to me when I am watching the DVD.

QuickPlay 3.7 looks nicer and I'd love to try it out, but I can't get past auto scanning and setting up ATSC channels with my hp express tuner card. Everything seems OK finding channels until around 36% then it crashes and shuts down every time. Way to go hp. Maybe 3.7.1 will work but for now I had to do an uninstall and rollback in Vista then grab 3.6 from hp's website to get it to work again.

It is highly likely that your system needs a tattoo. Since HP uses the same boards in many systems, they "tattoo" the motherboard after installing it so the recovery media knows which software to install.

My laptop motherboard was just replaced. On my laptop in the BIOS, the Product number is listed as "x123xx#ABA" and the UUID is all zeros. Now my recovery disc and the Quickplay download, both of which have been successful before, only install DVD Play. While yours may not have that generic code, yours may not be the proper code.

The big problem is, you will have to send it to HP to get it tattooed unless there is an ASP nearby you that will do it.

I am highly familiar with tattooing since, working for a national service organization, I've done it on many customer's computers. However, we are talking about a brand new dv6775us laptop that is a little over a month old with no service or hardware replacements done on it. QuickPlay 3.6 decided to notify me of the 3.7 update and after installing it and, while attempting to auto scan for ATSC channels, I get the mysterious "QuickPlay has encountered an error and has shut down" message in Vista.

I'll pass until the next version is released.

Sorry, I thought I quoted deeastman, but apparently I messed up.

Any chance you could hook me up with the ISO for my PC's tattoo utility? Since CompUSA closed, I'm still looking for a job with another ASP in the area.

I tried to update HP Quickplay 3.6 to 3.7 but setup aborts saying I need to install windows media player 9 or above first. I'm running Vista Ultimate 64 SP1 with WMP 11.

    Any clues on installing 3.7?

I forgot about this thread. I have provided the tattoo and some information on my blog, having sent my laptop to HP four times and they still can't get it right. Until HP is willing to provide a solution, I will leave the tattoo for the hundreds, maybe thousands of people who have had their motherboards replaced and not tattooed. If you are looking for it, check the 2008-07-09 post.

    Hello everyone,

I just got my new laptop, HP DV9930US. It is by far the best laptop I have used. As for the quickplay download screen, I tried and tried to download the 3.7 v 5704 by Cyberlink and was never successful. It would always stop at 20% download completed. So I googled and found a different page:

    docs.cyberlink.com/oem/hp/QP_DVDP/enu/upgrade.jsp

This download page was interesting b/c of the comments regarding the DVD play. On the top of this download page...it does say "Get the latest DVD PLAY Updates", maybe there is flaw in the update? Perhaps it was meant to enhance the DVD Play instead it seemed to destroy the quickplay as experienced by some people here? Did anyone email Cyberlink and was there anyone who may have been successful in getting 3.7 working properly? I finally got a copy 3.7 downloaded was wondering if I should install it but with eveyone having problems, I am skeptical?

I read somewhere that the only way to watch blu-rays with hp's blu-ray drives was with quickplay, is this true? If not, then I will gladly uninstall it.

    EDIT: Here it is-

Ensure quality playback of HD DVDs
Once you are certain that your notebook came equipped with an optical disc drive that is capable of reading HD DVDs, follow these guidelines to ensure that your playback is of the highest quality:

    1.
Plug the AC adapter into an external power source while viewing HD DVD content. CPU power is dedicated to supporting the HD DVD playback functions; all other applications must be closed before launching HD DVD playback.
    2.
Use QuickPlay to view your HD DVD content. HD DVD movies will only play through HP Quickplay software.
    3.
Clear the hard drive of clutter. Lack of hard drive space can cause performance problems with most applications. Approximately 2,048 MB of the hard drive is dedicated to HP QuickPlay and is not accessible to you.
