I have a new HP Pavilion dv9700t CTO with Vista 64-bit.
After a week of uninstalling bloatware, and installing software, at some point my QuickPlay Volume buttons started to cause:
1) Firefox to crash
2) Huge slowdowns in IE. There was a 5-second cycle time for each volume level change. During this, the volume display was on the screen and the computer gave full focus only to volume. I could not navigate or change tabs in IE. Streaming videos paused until volume cleared (30-60 seconds later) .Normal operation is that volume changes do not affect other software and that the see-thru volume display only shows up some times and is unobtrusive.
I tried several Vista System Restore points to no avail. All of the SR points were before the problem started and before several software packages were installed. No luck.
HP had me reinstall QuickPlay and related software, reset BIOS defaults (I hadn't changed anything in BIOS), and even revert from the shipped F.52 BIOS to the F.51 BIOS. None of this worked.
The only thing that worke was to do an HP System Recovery to wipe the C: drive and reinstall the Vista OS with all the original software.
I will be returning this comptuer to HP as my window to return it is closing in a week. At least I can start over with a new 21 days to try a new machine.
If anyone is having this problem with the HP QuickPlay Volume buttons on a similar machine, please do post here. (Note that this was not a general issue of the QuickPlay buttons not working at all - there are other threads for those issues).

Did you do a reformat and reinstall the OS or did you just n delete certain bloatware
-
I also have a brand new hp dv9700t, and this happens as well, and I guess this is what's the norm for quickplay...it just gets to the point when i don't even use the buttons, i use the the taskbar to change my volume, which is a real let down...
-
I have the same problem with my new 9700t, so I just put the volume on max and change it within the application instead when I watch or listen to something. It seems to hang particularly badly when I'm using the laptop on battery.
-
I used HP System Recovery to wipe the C: drive and reinstall everything back to day 1.
If other people are having the same problem, we need a better fix than to just stop using the volume buttons on QuickPlay. Have other users seen or fixed this issue? -
Are you satisfied to not use the cool volume buttons on your new laptop? I'm sending mine back.

I am chatting with yet another HP tech person. He seems to be only interested in fixing this computer or processing my refund or exchange. HP technicians report that the only way to fix this problem is to do a full System Recover. Of course this is not an acceptable solution. I have tried over and over to tell him that others are having the same problem and that HP needs to develop a better solution. He nows says that he will send the issue to R&D.
I am currently having this computer exchanged for a new one. -
I have a dv2700se (verve) and it has this problem as well. The volume window stays up for a long time making clicking noises, and I cannot do anything until it goes away.
-
I had this same problem. I thought it was a driver issue. But sometimes I could change the volume and not have that weird slow down. So after playing around with a few things. Mine came down to the program that display the volume box. I disabled the display box and now I can change the volume with no troubles. I just dont get the volume screen anymore but the volume still changes with no slowdowns. Just goto msconfig and disable the one of the hp quick launch programs that start up. I dont recall which one it is, I think its called hp quick launch display or something like that.
-
Perhaps not related, but basically on my HDX the volume controls linked to the quickplay buttons will pop up at seeminly random times and change the volume without asking.....up or down..
-
Thanks for that tip. I have sent mine back so will try disabling the Quick Launch display when I the the new replacement computer....with 21 more days to return it.
It is troubling that HP doesn't seem to understand this problem that many people are having with their high-end computer. -
Anyone else having this problem, please post it here and please report it to HP so that they know what's going on.
-
If you have QuickTouch installed that might be the culprit,
Also the media buttons are controlled by your sound card drivers.
Ive never ran into this issue before. What version QLB are you guys using? -
I'm not using the quicklaunch button software. I did a clean install of 64 bit vista and only installed drivers. my problem was crappy sound quality, so I tried updating drivers and since then vista has been saying no audio device found. as for the quicktouch, I installed that for about 10 mins and found it annoying to have 1/2 the screen taken up by the display, esp when playing CS:S. I then uninstalled quicktouch and soon after (updating drivers) had no sound.
-
I am having the same problems on my DV2736us but not on my DV2700t. Both have clean install of vista 64.
-
Only install QLB and you should be fine. Quicktouch GUI is what probably causes the issues -
I have the exact same problem on my dv2854 notebook, and have fixed it according to the person that posted earlier did by uninstalling the Quick Play program. Just go to Control Panel to do so, restart computer, and all works well!
See my thread here as well, http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=245202

I have spent about 4 hours on the phone with HP about this issue and every time until today they have told me that there is nothing I can do except reformat. Today the guy said he would "escalate the issue as there are many people with this exact issue." I told them that I refuse to reformat when it is an issue with HP software and it won't be fixed by a reformat or "recovery" as they throw around. I have a DV2845se that I bought at Best Buy and other than this issue I am happy. It only happens on 64 bit editions as far as I know. I think it is pathetic how HP tried to tell me to stop using iTunes, because that may be the problem. They also told me that the volume buttons are only for use with QuickPlay. The funny thing is that I went to Best Buy and the display model does the same thing as all of ours. It does not even have iTunes installed. Thanks for the advice guys about getting rid of that display. Why did HP not know how to do that. I come on here and I have a fix in less than five minutes. HP customer service does not understand how to help people. They just don't realize that reformatting is not always the solution.
-
HP customer service reads what it says on the book. They actually know nothing about the laptop itself.
NBR on the other hand is full of intelligent people that arent forced/payed to help people. -
I have the same setup and had the same problem as you kdanieli. I just put duck-tape over my controls and its no longer a problem for me. I love it when big corporations team up to produce great products.

I just bought a new dv9827 and it too has this same exavt issue. I did disable the volume display in startup and it seems to have taken away the problem of a major slow down. I hesitate to say the this FIXED the problem as I feel that when you pay close to $1,000.00 for a new laptop and it has a glitch that many others are also experiencing HP should step up to the plate and get a fix for this issue. Although the on screen display for me is not a real big deal... I paid for it and I want it to work and work correctly, it is a matter of principle.
-
It's more simple than all this, just open up task manager, and close the quick touch on screen display. After that try using your buttons and it won't make you freeze.
-
Just downloaded Minefield, a 64-bit version of firefox. Seems to have fixed the problem for me.
-
Make sure you have the latest version of QuickTouch installed. See my thread here http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=338874 for the latest version of it. Apparently it fixes the slow down issue.
