    I've got a DV8233CL and I reinstalled MCE2005.

I deleted the recovery partition (made some recovery discs and backed up the SWSETUP folder).

My partition table looks like this:

    disk 1:

    1. 30gb (NTFS - Windows XP)
    2. 30gb (NTFS - WinVista)
    3. 30gb (EXT3 - Linux)
    4. 1gb (NTFS - QuickPlay) (I'm not sure why my partition is 1gb, I keep reading it' supposed to be like 204mb)

Anyway, Pressing either the DVD or QuickPlay buttons when the machine is shut off will just load the computer into Windows (same as if I just pushed the power button).

I'm also curious to know, the version of QuickPlay that is in my SWSETUP folder is version 2.0. Is there a newer version that I can download instead of installing what is in my SWSETUP folder?

There are two 'editions' of QuickPlay for Windows XP.

    1) QuickPlay for Windows (this loads as a media player in windows)
    2) QuickPlay DirectPlay (this loads in your quickplay partition on a stripped down version of windows)

Your SwSetup folder should have 2 QuickPlay installers. You already have QuickPlay for Windows installed. So now you want to install QuickPlay DirectPlay (I think the folder is called HPQPDP).

There is a newer version of QuickPlay for Windows, but it's only available for Vista. It's called QuickPlay for Windows 3.0. It's not available for download in any 'official' sites, and it's not DirectPlay (meaning it's not quick booting).

EDIT: I didn't notice that you had Vista installed already. DO NOT INSTALL HPQPDP WITH VISTA. The only possible way to get DirectPlay to work with Vista is if you install it prior to installing Vista (and even then there's no guarantee it will work). The HPQPDP installer doesn't play well with Vistas boot loader.

so if i am upgrading my harddrive (going 200gb) from my stock 120gb from HP, will i have to recreate the 1gb (1028mb) partition for QP? i really want the directplay feature and vista blows, which is why i'll be installing a fresh xp install onto the new HD

Did your laptop ship with Vista or XP?

    If it is XP-
If you use the restore disc they should format and recreate all the necessary partitions. If you are installing XP from aclean disc then you will have to recreate the partition, just partition the HDD while installing Windows and install using the swsetup folder.

    If it is Vista-
Then there wont be any Quickplay partition. HP removed the directplay support for Vista. There are ways to install the XP supported quickplay direct version but I dont know if you want to go through all that trouble.

miner, i originally purchased the laptop for the direct play feature, not knowing it would be obsolete when i purchased it, so yes, i have already created the 1gb partition and reinstalled XP and im ready to go

going to keep searching for direct play
