i got it the 30th.
last night i was installing updates i was told i needed.
one was windows something.
the other was an nvidia update.
my screen started getting bigger and smaller, and black, and didnt do anything, until it told me to restart.
now my brand new computer wont get past the boot screen.
what do i do ?
i have two research papers on there that are due in an hour. **** ! help !

Can you boot into Safe Mode? Hit 'F8' I believe during statup to trigger it. Get in there, copy the files to a USB stick, and get another computer with a printer and print the files.
-
the paper is the least of my concern.
i have a cool professor who is understanding.
i just have a 2000 dollar laptop that's two days old that doesn't boot up, and im freaking out.
i can't boot up in safe mode.
i can just push whatever button tells me the system information. that's it.
do i call them and get abrand new one ? -
no this is probably a software problem, you said you were downloading the nvidia driver off microsoft and when it was installing it went dead. this is the video card driver and obviously it didnt like your system. Did you burn the recovery discs? you can use them to reinstall without formatting. however another option is to press F8 right after the HP logo comes on and instead of safe mode, go to enable VGA, this I think changes your video card driver to generic then try safe mode and/or normal. if its the video card driver that was the problem which is the most likely reason, then this will reset it so you can get in and get the HP drivers off the net and print your stuff.

have i caused any permanent damage to the laptop or done anything that may cause problems in the future ?
-
i know how nervous you are but try and calm down if your laptop is that new im sure everything will be fine
try booting from the last known good configuration this will boot from the last known working configuration you had before you installed the updates
directions from windows

If your computer has a single operating system installed, press and hold the F8 key as your computer restarts. You need to press F8 before the Windows logo appears. If the Windows logo appears, you will need to try again by waiting until the Windows logon prompt appears, and then shutting down and restarting your computer.
If your computer has more than one operating system, use the arrow keys to highlight the operating system you want to start, and then press F8.
On the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to highlight Last Known Good Configuration, and then press ENTER.
If your computer has more than one operating system installed, use the arrow keys to highlight the operating system that you want to start by using Last Known Good Configuration, and then press ENTER. Windows will then resume starting normally.
i hope this help you other wise call hp -
i have the system restore cd from hp.
should i use that ?
is it bad to system restore ? -
did you attempt what i said you may fix it with out having to do that
-
Do *not* use the restore discs unless all of your data has been backed up. It will overwrite the data currently on the drive, including your data, and "restore" everything back to day one.
Have you followed the advice posted so far? If not, power off the notebook by pressing/holding the power button for >4 seconds. Then, power the notebook on again and press the F8 key *before* Windows attempts to load. That should you some boot options and and allow you to boot into safe mode, which should bypass any drivers that were corrupt/partially installed. -
ive been in class posting via sidekick.
ill post what happens in about fifteen when im home. -
none of those worked. F8 did nothing.
ill just sys restore.
thanks guys. -
really you pushed f8 right when you turned on the pc? as soon as you see the hp logo keep pushing the f8 key
-
not a single thing. it just sat on the hp screen.
now its installing hp software after the restore.
restoring isn't bad for a computer, is it ? -
so it restored it self? well its not bad for it but bad for you because you probably lost all your essay papers sry man
-
the computer just restored.
then installed the hp software.
and restarted.
to a black screen with just the mouse icon.
its been on this for about twenty minutes.
im afraid to touch it.
any idea what its doing ?
safe to restart ? -
im not sure id let it sit for a while just to make sure if it continues to stay like that im guessing you need to restart i never had that happen before
-
do any of you know the HP return policy ?
after the restore, it still won't boot up.
i just wanna get rid of this bad boy.
i just want my card refunded.
im on the phone with tech support.
but i really just wanna dump it.
if its giving me this much trouble in the first 24 hours, i want another one before completely calling it quits with HP. -
uhm.. restore it again and choose to not update graphic drivers?
very sure restoring a laptop is not bad for it.. i've restored my hp desktop plenty of times (registry/graphic drivers/virus slowing down my computer)..
i know its a bit late but, when i had any of those issues, i could access and backup all of the files on that hp desktop on my other desktop computer through the home network.. you should have tried to save some of the files on the laptop before restoring although i know of a program that might be able to recover some files..
