Is there a noticeable difference in speed from a 4200 to a 5400. As you can see below they do not offer a 5400 with this configuration at all.

    Compaq Presario R3000Z customize notebook
    - AMD Athlon(TM) 64 3400+ 2.20 GHz
    - Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP Professional-only $49!!
    - 1.0GB DDR SDRAM (2x512MB)
    - 80 GB 4200 RPM Hard Drive
    - 4X DVD+RW/R & CD-RW Combo Drive
    - FREEUpgradeto54g(TM) Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN !!
    - 15.4" WVA WUXGA (1920x1200)
    - 64MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(TM) 4 440 Go +1394 & 5-in-1
    - 8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

Do you think this is a decent config. I am assisting another friend but he only question is the Hard Drive speed. I've never seen the performance myself of a 4200 and if you have I would appreciate the feedback.

Be sure to get the 12 cell battery option. Well worth the $25. I would say get Bluetooth too but with their "free" 802.11g upgrade Bluetooth suddenly becomes rather expensive.

I and a lot of other people bought the cheapest HD available for the R3000z/zv5000z and swapped in Hitachi 7200RPM drives. MAJOR performence difference. See mwave.com and newegg.com for the drives. I don't know what HP's problem is about only offering 4200RPM drives, there's no technical reason for it. I sold the 4200RPM drive (also by Hitachi) on eBay.

Other than those things, very nice configuration [ :D].

Thank you for the reply. I didn't know that the drives in the Compaq Presario system were upgradeable. This helps a lot.

I did some research and found that -

    http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/buynow/buy_tr7k60.html

    7K60-60 HTS726060M9AT00 08K0939 60 GB ATA-6 2.5" 7,200 8 MB
    E7K60-60 HTE726060M9ATX0 08K0889 60 GB ATA-6 2.5" 7,200 8 MB

    - the best two drives out now on the market for this laptop as an upgrade, but they are somewhat pricey at the momment. I am wondering if anyone knows where else I might be able to get one of these, let's say for $200. or below.[?]
