Okay everyone, first post. I've been doing quite a bit of research and to post this thread. I realize it is old but maybe someone has the time to explain some things to a noobie.
I have a Compaq R4000. CPU-Z tells me it is an AMD Sempron 3000+ Socket 939 1.8MHz. I have the stock 512mb RAM and 40G Harddrive. I use this laptop extensively and I just don't have the cash to dole out $500-$1000 for a new laptop. Looks like newegg has the products to update this old paperweight into something new for a little over $200. This is what I am thinking:
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 4000+ San Diego 2.4GHz Socket 939
RAM: 2GB (2X1GB) combo Crucial? Kingston? Corsair?
Harddrive: Hitachi 7200 Travelstar 100GB
Battery: 12 cell (Eventually but not crucial to operations, I can plug in.)
By the way what does the "San Diego" or "Orleans" or "Manchester" mean? Are there any benefits one way or another?
I do not know enough about x2 to mess with the BIOS. Installing is no problem as I found the "how to" install stuff online already.
Will this at all improve graphic speeds in the slightest since my current RAM
configuration (I think) shares with my ATI Radeon 200M 128 graphics. With improved processor and 4x the RAM wouldn't there be some improvement? Can all of this stuff be done? I just don't want to purchase these things and find out that this cannot be pulled off with this machine.
I know this is long, thanx in advance for taking the time to read this.

I'd start by upgrading the memory and adding a faster hard drive first. Depending on your needs you'll probably get more bang for your buck there than upgrading the CPU. The hard drive is often the slowest part on a notebook. I have a desktop with a Sempron 2800+ CPU. It's still quite good for Office, Internet, Music, light Photoshop, etc.

Cool, I will try that first and see how it goes. I would like to eventually get heavier into Photoshop. Thanks

Welcome to the board Flyfaster. Just a FYI- there is a discussion going on about upgrading zv6000 which is the same laptop just with different casing.
All the info would apply to ur laptop as well.
*Model numbers matter when choosing an cpu upgrade-read linked post.
* We can't do dual core. Not that I know of. No bios for it I think.

I just upgraded my R4025us (R4000) to a AMD64 4000+ (aka FX-53) its the claw hammer core 1mb cashe ram and 1.5v cpu it works great i used to have a AMD64 3200+ with 512kb cashe it rocks i notice very little increase in heat but the speed increase is huge... i also took the time to upgrade to a new keyboard (black) and a new TOP as mine was VERY VERY worn out... its like a NEW machine again... also i put a 160gb hd in and 2gb of ram its smoke'n fast. yes you can upgrade the CPU i just did it i will take screen shots in the next few days and post them.
