I have narrowed down my search of notebook to R4000 with AMD Athlon 64 4000+ (2.4 GHz/1MB I2 Cache). But with 8 lbs, R4000 is a bit heavy to carry around. Do you suggest any other alternative in same price range with equal or better performance but less weight? I will be using my notebook most of the time for processing large satellite images. Thanks a lot.

I think the problem is the price range - there's not much else with an AMD processor out there for HP's prices with the same price vs. quality vs. performance. (I only say that because I just spent alot of time figuring that out). You probably need to go to a smaller screen (get into HP's turion models?) and/or increase your budget by a couple hundred dollars or more so you can look at some other laptops, like Gateway 7510gx at BestBuy (not much difference in weight?) or maybe MSI's new turion model coming out at Xmeld.com. I'm sure there are others that I'm not mentioning here...

I also found same. Dell Inspiron 6000 with IntelĀ® PentiumĀ® M Processor 750 (1.86 GHz/2MB Cache/533MHz FSB) keeping other specifications same as R4000 costs about 300$ more. I am tempted by "Cool'n'Quiet(TM) Technology" of AMD Athlon(TM) 64 4000+ processor. Can you tell me how AMD 64 processor compares with AMD turin performance-wise?

    thanks!

Me, no, but there are several other threads on this site that might help you with that. I do know that the turion will still be 64 bit, if that's important to you...

    Acer TravelMate 4402wlmi. Turion 64 ML-30, X700, 100GB 5400rpm, DVDRWDL Slot Load, 6-in-1 reader, Windows XP Pro. 6.5lbs ~$1250

    GateWay 7510gx. A64 3700+, X600, 100GB, DVDRWDL, 6-in-1 reader, Windows XP Home. 7.5lbs(I think) ~$1250

Acer Ferrari 4005wlmi. To much specs to list but, it's one of the best portable notebooks out there. 6.3lbs ~$2100 :budget:

MSI MS-1029, X700, DVDRW. 6.4lbs ~$850 for the barebone "coming soon..." :hardfind:
