Any reasons why my brand new 2GB OCZ RAM stick only shows .98GB which is the same as the 1GB stick that came with my 8510p?

I tried CPU-Z 1.43 and Everest and other methods of reading the RAM and all are the same. It seems OCZ mislabeled the stick, whichclearly sas 2gb. It came from OCZ direct, so no 3rd party mischief is likely.

    Anyone else encounter this issue?

Any chance it is problem on the HP side?

And yes, I tried just installing the OCZ stick alone and swapping slots.

looks like the mislabeled it. but to be sure , have you only looked under windows ?
what amount is shown in the bios ?
if it´s still 1 GB, then ask for an exchange. i guess ocz would like to know of this, since this seems to be an error during production. and i guess it won´t be the only one thats mislabeled.

BIOS will reveal all. Most likely a mislabeled RAM

This :p But yeah RAM is pretty simple so I doubt your comp has anything to do with it.

Thanks guys. I am of the same opinion but of course OCZ response was:

Comment: What model laptop are you using?

What a silly problem. I sure hope it is an OCZ issue

And the final answer is mislabled RAM.

Well OCZ was rather thorough, initially having me send photo's of the RAM. They were a little shocked (I think) that mislabled RAM came direct from them - perhaps a little shrinkage?.

The whole process took a little longer then I would have liked, BUT when I mentioned this OCZ sent me back two new 2GB sticks for my single bad one and they went out of their way to make sure that they were sending me the proper RAM.

So my hat is off to OCZ. Compared to my HP saga, OCZ rates a 10. Email updates, they called me twice, stunning really. And I can not fault them for being thorough.

The new 8510p is running like a dream and the Vista 32 bit is behaving. My fan noise is most modest and rarely cycles high.

The only software headache I have had was with synching to my Palm based Treo to Outlook. And the problem was with Palm.

glad you got it sorted out with OCZ.

and a damn nice thing to send you another stick...
well, bought the ocz ram also a few weeks ago, and i´ve got to say it´s worth it ( not trying to push their sales ;-) )

btw, have you got your problems with the 8510p resolved ? just curious, cause it looks like there will be another bios for fixing the the notebooks that did not have a fix with the f.0c bios.

Schoko: Here's the thing. I now have a new 8510p now that is working fine. Dare I update the bios? I'll wait a while I think.

In hindsight the trouble with the old one might have been a combination of the computer and a non-compatible OCZ stick (non compatible with the old bios). I'll never know.

After several failed onsite repair efforts the computer was just not the same (kind of like a car after a big accident). I updated the latest bio's when they came out and they seemed to fix 99% of the computers problems. Once HP OK'd the return, I shipped the computer back to HP and the suspect RAM to OCZ.

    Lucky you.

Dont update the BIOS as of yet. Do it when something is going wrong)like overheating and stuff) or if you know this BIOS will definately improve your system. Only fix something if its broken
