Be sure to flash in the current BIOS (revision F.12) from the Compaq R3000z support page first if you don't already have it. The original F.03 BIOS was ridiculously picky about which brands on memory chips it supported. Run http://www.memtest.org for at least 30 minutes after you've done your upgrade and run Aquamark (or something else suitable) to stress test it.

Ditto the Crucial recommendation, but try to specify Micron memory chips just to be safe (Crucial has started mixing in Infineon chips, which suffered memory corruption errors with F.03 in dual SODIMM configurations). It shouldn't matter now that F.12 is out, but HP does the bulk of their testing against Crucial/Micron. PC2700 is what HP uses, PC3200 won't hurt if you want to get that (and it's recommended if you don't get Micron chips) but it'll run at PC2700 speed.
