If I upgrade the RAM then does it void HP 1year warranty. Also, is it possible to upgrade ourselves or it has to opened by a technician, and any tutorial on how to go about it.

It shouldn't, but double check with HP if upgrading your RAM will void your warranty.
Upgrading RAM can be done by anyone and is the easiest upgrade that can be done on your notebook. Usually the RAM compartment can be accessed under your notebook. Make sure you remove your battery and unplug your ac adapter before doing anything. There's only one way to putting your RAM in your notebook, so it'll be fairly straight forward. -
no it wont. many notebook manufacturers including hp allows you to upgrade the hard drive and memory.

How to find out what type of RAM is installed, and which is the compatible RAM available in the market?
Last month I was upgrading RAM for my office desktop, and there were several types under DDR2_PC4200 (like PC-4200ECC, 4200REG), and although the number was same 4200 some of them were incompatible which I found out only after installing it. So, it would be nice to get that info beforehand. -
Run cpu-z. http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php It has tabs for memory. If running under Vista, select "Run As Administrator" or some info may not show up.
Contemporary notebook memory is 200-pin DDR2-667 SO-DIMMS (non-ECC), unless it is an older notebook. -
It will not void your warrenty -
The Magnuson-Moss Act in the USA guarantees that it will not void your warranty. HP does not have to "allow" you to upgrade it. They HAVE to still warranty the rest of the system (but not the new RAM) as long as it's obvious that the RAM did not cause the problem. It's the law, no matter what HP salespeople tell you.
