I was configuring my envy this morning to purchase and when I got to the Display Tab, the Radiance display was not an option and instead their bright view infinity display was the only option. Whats going on??? anyone else seeing this?

wow...talk about stupid. thats the whole point in getting the computer. it will probably come back in a few weeks just like the envy 15 was missing the i7 option for a bit. wonder if it just has to do with what is in stock and what is not at the time.

but come on HP how can you remove something like that?

It's probably low on stock. You could always call them and ask.

oh wow. yeah HP musta run out of stock if they're not offering the reason why people were getting the envy 14 anymore (least the reason why I got it, gotta have my 1600x900)

Ugh nooo, I was configuring mine too. I just happened to remove it yesterday from the cart because I wasn't sure about the expensive 3 yr care package. I called them and at first they didn't know what I was talking about when I said radiance display. Then they said they had no idea when it would be back or why it was gone so I suggested maybe it was low on supply and they said yes that might be it.

I really wanted this laptop for college and I have little time left before I have to order one for it to be at my school before school starts. Frustration...

Yeah, found the same problem. Suddenly found incompatibility with my order on account that the radiance option was no longer available. That was bloody annoying. There's little point in getting this laptop if you can't get the radiance option. Hopefully this is a temporary glitch until they get new stock. I can wait for a while, but not too long or else its off to research other options. Sigh...

I know right... I go back to college in 4 weeks. I'm so frustrated about this. I really wanted it before I went back. I hope they bring it back soon. I'm going to call tomorrow and see whats going. But yeah, no point in getting this laptop without the amazing display. the display is what makes it compete against MAC in my opinion.

dang id guess i have to stick with my ultra view for my envy 17

i mean in my opinion i think the radiance display should be included with the price you get more what you paid for with a bigger laptop..

i might replace it and add in another 200 later for the radiance display but ill have to stick with this for now i need my laptop quick

Well initial release, the base cost was $1099, and that included the Radiance. Now base cost is $999 with Brightview, but it's a $200 upgrade, so in essence it's really only $100 more, depending on how you look at it.

Has anyone talked with customer service and found out when/if the display will be back?

If for whatever reason the Radiance display is already discontinued due to whatever reason, I find myself looking at other options as well. It seems I'm in the same boat as others: student looking for a nice laptop within a certain time frame.

It's a 10% off deal. Stackable with some other deals, but not all. Just tried contacting HP, and apparently presale product information is closed on Sundays. Any other #s that I can try?

If the Brightview 1600x900 was available, the E14 would still be a good option without the Radiance, but the 1366x768 resolution sucks.

My wife recently ordered a 1920x1080 display laptop and she received one with the wrong display, 1366x768. When you are accustomed to working with a FullHD screen, 1366x768 looks really old school.

What can you stack it with to achieve maximum savings?

I just called HP, talked to someone in Home Sales. He told me that the Radiance Display was still available and being offered. Just got home, I wasn't in front of a PC to double-check at the time - just looked, no Radiance option, not sure what he was talking about.

Thank you! That is awesome that you came by to post. Radiance is really what differentiates the Envy 14 from other machines. Otherwise, there's several other alternatives. I think the Envy 14 is a fine machine, but it's also more expensive than the competition even with 1366x768 screen.

Hey Sammy- there isn't a way to change out the display with out doing an exchange/return. you've got 21 days to do either, and with the exchange you can use your existing Envy until the new one comes so you have limited down time. Hope this helps, thanks for buying HP!

Everything about the Envy 14 is attractive in my eyes. The lightweight design, the performance, and all the little things like the Beats Audio and the backlit keyboard - the Engadget review is right on.

Like I mentioned, I'll be waiting for the Radiance Display issue(s) to be worked out and hopefully get placed back on the options list. As soon as it's there, my order will be placed.

Not sure if you'd be able to shed any light on some upcoming promotions and/or discounts that I'd be able to couple with my student discount?

    Jason,

The North American support really isn't that big of a thing for me, and I think most would be included in that sentiment. The main value of the Envy over most laptops is the screen really, a lot of us want the higher-res along with E2E glass/plastic. The backlit keyboard is great too, as is the metal chassis. Basically man, all the things that make the Macbooks "special" that most laptops lack.

I would like you to know you boys ticked off a lot of people when you reduced the price by $100 but made the radiance display a $200 upgrade, thus basically increasing the price of the Envy by $100, as initially it was $100 cheaper but included the radiance display. If you guys could lower the price down to a $100 upgrade, that would be great. $200 really is pushing it my man.

Competition as I see it is:

    - HP's own DV6t Select Edition. Has same CPU options, backlit keyboard, cheaper price. A little bigger and heavier, but also has the 550MHz HD 5650 compared with 450MHz HD 5650 in Envy 14.

    - Lenovo Y460. $999 - i5-520m, 4GB RAM, 500GB 5400RPM HDD, ~ 4.5lbs, 550MHz HD 5650

    - Acer TimelineX 4820TG. $899 - i5-450m, 4GB RAM, 500GB 5400RPM HDD, 4.6lbs, 550MHz HD 5650

The metal chassis does add value, and I love it, but not important to everyone. The launch issues have tainted the image quite a bit at least here at NBR that I can tell. And lack of knowledge by the sales reps doesn't add confidence. For example I (and others) were told the 256GB SSD was a Western Digital with TRIM support. When we finally received our Envy 14's, it turned out they were Samsung's without TRIM support. There's a whole host of consistent build issues too like large gaps or overflush trackpads, freezing or locking of video cards with gaming, power supply notifications that the supplied power supply is not adequate, CPU whine, hiss from headphone jacks, quick launch buttons not working properly, list goes on.

I know there's always launch issues but quality control was very shoddy and customer service support was spotty at best. If I didn't love the machine otherwise, I probably would have returned it, and the only issues I have are the hissing from the headphone jacks, and SSD without TRIM which I'm hoping is rectified soon.

It's great that you were willing to log on here to post. We often get misleading and sometimes contradictory info from the sales website and phone reps.

To add to wingnut's list, I have also seen a large number of posts from potential buyers looking for a Windows alternative to the 13" and 15" Macbook Pro.

I agree with nu_D's comments above regarding the appeal of the Envy 14. I have gotten accustomed to the Brightview 1920x1080 screen on my Envy 15 and I can't imagine anyone deliberately ordering a 1366x768 screen for either the E14 or E15 who wouldn't be disappointed later down the road. This seems to be a major problem with all of the Canada buyers interested in the Envy 15, but they cannot order one with the FullHD screen. Very few people are buying Envy laptops to check their email and run microsoft office. These laptops are great for image and video editing as well as 3D modeling and demanding games, all of which are a much better experience on the 1920x1080 screen (or at least 1600x900 on the E14).

I use both Macs and Windows PCs for work and unfortunately, some important blu-ray disc authoring applications don't run very well on Macs, even when running windows bootcamp. On the Envy 15 with the dual Intel X18-M G2 SSD, i'm able to get a level of performance I previously thought was simply not possible in a laptop when running applications like Avid Media Composer 5, Sonic Scenarist, NetBlender, of course all the CS5 apps and I'm able to use a very fast USB 3.0 blu-ray writer.

Thanks for coming here as an HP rep jason.o. Having a rep on the notebookreview forum is a smart idea, seeing as some of the other major notebook brands have one already.

The Envy 14 is a very fine notebook. The thinness, metal chassis, radiance screen, and keyboard really contribute to the great overall package of the Envy 14. All of these combined with a reasonable price make the notebook very attractive to us consumers. When HP raised the price $200 for the screen, the value of the overall package that made the Envy great fell. $200 is a bit of a steep cost for that upgrade. $100 or even $150 is much more realistic. Please keep us updated on the stock of the Radiance screen - I am sure that many orders will come flooding in once the stock and price change.

My wife just received her E14 (base model but with the Radiance screen upgrade). The screen is absolutely drop dead gorgeous and so far, she has had none of the build quality issues I've seen posted on NBR. I was about to pull the trigger on two more E14s - one for my daughter and one for myself but until the Radiance option is once again available, I'm holding off. I'll be interested to see how this plays out.

Yaaar, I'll be waiting for the Radiance as well... Ugh, and I had even planned to stay up to 12 am to buy it Friday at the very start of the MA tax free weekend... Just my luck, should have acted quicker I guess >.<. If a sales rep might happen to have an eta on the returning stock a post here would help alleviate my urge to check the hp website every 20 seconds. Well I'm just glad they are planning to restock, otherwise I'd be looking at macs right about now.

GL with that ;) . I'm in the same boat, really want this laptop and been trying to put it off seeing if some deal comes by. But honestly I'd rather have one for the start of school rather than wait for a deal that might not come. Once they get the radiance screen back, I'm thinking about just pulling the trigger.

Speaking with HP Customer Service now, they don't have them due to volume of orders. Poopie.

I'm wondering what happened to the Radiance screens on the Envy 14s. I remember that it used to be a standard, then it was an option and when I ordered last night I didn't see the option, so I assumed that it was standard. Now I see that the resolution is 1366x768 as opposed to the 1600x900 Radiance is that correct?

You have 21 days to try the product on and decide whether to keep it or not.

I hope this information has been of assistance to you.

Do you have further questions that I can help you with?
    17:34:19
    David
Do any of the HP laptops come with the radiance screens anymore? Is there a shortage of them or something? Is it possible to order one and install myself?
    17:35:21
    Natalie
In this case, I guess, there must have been shortage in the components since there has been a lot of customers ordering this PC with it.
    17:36:26
    Natalie
It is also not possible to purchase an accessory to have this installed to your PC.
    17:37:11
    David
So is it possible that when you get more in stock I can ship my computer to have it retrofitted?
    17:37:41
    Natalie
    That is right.
    17:38:09
    Natalie
You can have your PC ship back to us and exchange it with a model with Radiance display.
    17:38:36
    David
Would you assume that the cost would be $200 since that was the option, plus whatever it costs to have it installed?
    17:39:42
    Natalie
You would only be paying for the cost of the Radiance display. I assume it would be $200 as it was before.
    17:39:59
    David
Final question, any idea when we might see the option available again?
    17:40:02
    Natalie
I would suggest that you check the website regularly and contact us back within 21 days.
    17:40:09
    David
    OH I will lol
    17:40:19
    Natalie
I really have no idea as to when will it be back.
    17:40:28
    David
I will have to continue shopping to see if anything else compares to the Envy, only with a better screen
    17:40:40
    David
Well thank you for your time. Sorry about my frustrations
    17:40:46

Thanks for the chat, cuban. lol why would you apologize about your frustrations? Hp's the one that caused it.

It's good to know that we can send in the envy or get it exchanged. That means if a deal comes while radiance is still out of stock, it doesn't really matter.

Well by being nice to them I was able to get 105$ in back credit for when my system arrives. I have no idea if they save those logs, if they do, they will see I am a nice guy.

I guess there isn't a shortage of Radiance displays in Singapore. You can still buy them there. :-(

You did better than my rep, who flat out insisted that the Envy 14 never came with a Radiance display as an option.

    No ability to customize :l

Which (with all due respect) is why I NEVER take anything a phone rep says as gospel. It's also why I will not order a computer over the phone. At least by ordering online, I have documentation as to what I ordered and if there's a question, I'll use the online chat so that I can save a copy of the conversation.
