My 1st gen Envy 14 feels like it's getting hotter these days and the fans are working harder. I have an i7-Q840 averaging ~74c just from Hulu, ~82c with heavy use, ~64c with light use and ~58c idling.I was wondering if anybody has opened it up and re-applied thermal paste to try to cool it down.

If you have, did it work? Or is this just a symptom of an aging laptop and worn out fans.

How can fans get worn out? When was the last time you gave it a good cleaning to include the heat exchanger? The fan can accumilate a lot of dust, hair, squirrals...

I clean it every few months and it's never very dirty. I've had plenty of desktop video card fans start to wear down, wine and even stop spinning because of poor bearings. It wouldn't surprise me that any fan can wear out, it's a constantly moving part after all.

I've had fans just die on me, but never slow down that I'm away of. There's some programs that will tell you what RPM's your fan is running at. Maybe you can see if it's slowing down at all.
