I had a non-legit version of Windows XP(Ultimate?) installed on my laptop by somebody, so i decided to borrow my cousins XP Home edition. He does not remember the product key, however i have a product key on the bottom of my laptop that i think i should be able to use? I turned the laptop on let it load up, then i inserted the Home edition cd. The Welcome to Microsoft Windows Xp window pops up, i click on Install Windows XP, and i get another popup telling me that "Windows XP Setup does not support upgrading from Microsoft Professional to Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition". I clicked ok, and it led me to windows setup gave me only one option which is to do a new installation, clicked next, accepted the agreement, and then it asks me for my product key. I entered the one that came with my LAPTOP, not cd, and it said the Product Id is not valid. i tried the belarc advisor and still not valid. How can i uninstall the current messed up XP version and get the new cd to work with my product key?

Firstly, are you sure the product key on your laptop is for Windows XP Home edition? If not, you might want to find out what version of Windows it's for. Secondly, the only way to remove the OS is by reinstalling a different OS.

Sounds like you're trying to install it from in Windows? You should be able to boot from the optical drive (check your bios, and set the boot order to boot from CD/DVD first before HDD), then pop in the Home disc you have, and when you boot your computer up, it'll prompt you instructions (this happens before Windows boots). Just follow those instructions, you'll come to a screen where you can format your hard drive and delete partitions and such.
