Does anybody have any experience with installing their own copy of windows XP on your laptops. I have XP Pro and if I could, I'd like to save a little money and buy a DV1000 with XP Home pre-installed.

So if I reformatted the machine and installed my copy of XP Pro, would I be able to find all the drivers for anything or am I going to be missing stuff?

Yes. You can! Your system came with recovery CD's. One should be the XP home CD (the Operating System CD) Then the other should be an application and Driver Recovery DVD. Install xp pro, quick reformat..once xp pro is installed install Driver Recovery CD, then get online and install service pack 2. Service pack 2 will be able to install drivers such as USB drivers and such (incase your Recovery DVD doesn't have it) If you need any other drivers.....go to HP support. (note: use your Driver Recovery CD it also installs your motherboard chipset drivers)

LOL, I was thinking of doing the same thing, figured I'd save the 50 dollars and when the laptop got here just go ahead and dump it, reformat and load my copy of XP pro. I kinda figured XP pro would find most of the drivers anyway but good to know they send them on a seperate disk incase you have to reinstall, was hoping it wasn't a one disk deal where they had the OS and Drivers on the same disk and it would just load everything to factory specs in one swipe.

Thanks again for the info, ordering tonight after the wife balances the checkbook. Wish it didn't take 3 weeks to get the shipment tho.

Just to let you know, I did the same thing on this machine. I was really glad to see the motherboard chipset drivers on the CD. XP pro works flawlessly, For some reason my USB controller wouldn't load from the driver disk. But as soon as I put Service Pack 2 on. All the new drivers in the service pack, it installed the USB controller.
