    Hi,
Earlier today I was cleaning my dv5z and I noticed some crumbs under the spacebar, so I removed the key. Now whenever I reattach it, it only works if I press right at the center. I'm pretty sure the problem is with the metal bar on the underside of key, I'm not sure how that's supposed to connect to the keyboard. I called HP and used their online chat and both people told me I would have to send it in, which would cost me $300. I've also tried googling it but this spacebar seems to have a different design so nothing has worked. So I'd really appreciate any help because this is really frustrating.

    Thanks,
    Wesam

Try pressing down quite firmly on the entire space bar an see if it clicks down to snap in place. Also make sure if there is a rubber spacer between the space bar and keyboard circuit board that it's in the right place.

    Good Luck ;)

I just looked at my shift key to compare and it seems like the hooks that hold down the metal bar for my spacebar have broken off. I can't understand how this could happen as I removed the key carefully. Can anyone with a similar model check if their space bar has hooks so I can be sure?

You might also try shopping for a new keyboard on eBay.

I bought up about a dozen keyboards recently, as low as $8 each (new ones).

Be careful, a lot of companies sell keyboards that are extracted from parts machines, and if they look good, they sell them as new.

The best ones I bought where genuine new ones from Hong Kong. Shipping took about 2 weeks.

Now I change out the keyboards whenever they start feeling "a little less than new". On the DV9500T's, its a fast 5 minute operation.
