I have the DV7 Pavilion and have been trying to figure out all day how to record my PS3 gameplay footage to the DV7. It has an intergrated TV Tuner but im not sure how to connect things up.

    I use an HDMI connection for my PS3.. (PS3 > TV )

Is there anyway I can do this...if not, is there anything I could buy to get this done ? I called up tech support and their clueless.. Im sure there has to be someway I could record an external video source onto the laptop.. Or atleast display the external video source on the monitor part of the laptop.

    I appreciate it,

    Mike

I think the integrated TV tuner on the DV7 is output only... it doesn't accept any other inputs other than the antenna connector...

You most likely need a separate adapter to capture the footage from PS3... You can use an ExpressCard or USB tuner from Hauppauge or Avermedia... that should do the job (though you can't use the HDMI out from the PS3... you have to use S-video or composite)

no the tv tuner should be an input since the tv signal goes into the computer. you need to buy what's called a capture card for laptops and that might work.

check out youtube there are several ways to use the tv tuner to input your ps3 signal. probably an hdmi/component --> coaxial converter would work or you can use a capture device which would require several components and connective wires to convert the video signal to a usb one. again check out youtube youre bound to find something there

HDMI has HDCP, which by design, doesn't allow you to copy/record from an HDMI source... there are component-input capture devices... but those are few and far in between...

HD PVR basically records shows from HD broadcasts... looking at the link you posted... there's a component input you can connect from your set-top box to the PVR... but I'm not too sure if it'll work with consoles...

I've seen RF modulators for composite and S-Video... but I haven't seen one for component video... and HDMI will definitely not have an RF modulator device since it's a digital-only connection...

I know you this site probably doesnt want us posting links to products, but if anyone could PM me something specific that I should look into, I'd appreciate it.

Whether it be a specific capture card or some configuration to work with the internal tv tuner.

I just called their tech support and they said they havent tried it with the PS3 or Xbox yet...so its unknown at this time. If I knew for sure it would work, i'd get it.

I tried google'ing "HD PVR PS3" ....and basically only found articles talking about playback on the PS3... couldnt find one on recording games with the device.

There are a couple of capture cards that support component video input or HDMI... but it's more of a desktop solution than a notebook solution...

Don't think there's a sure-fire way to get HD capture from PS3/Xbox360 on a notebook at the moment... but the Hauppauge HD PVR is probably the way to go if it does work.

EDIT: Hmm... someone got the Hauppauge HD PVR device and recorded some footage off the the PS3... he connected to it using component cables... http://www.medianoobs.com/watch.php?movieid=45

Records Composite / S-video quality video only. There are a hundred devices out there already that can do the same.

The HD PVR is one of the very few that can record Component quality video.

Where does it say anywhere on that video that it was recorded using that device ? Regardless, the video quality is amazing..looks better then the Game itself on my 61 inch samsung DLP. (HDMI)

That video (medianoobs.com/watch.php?movieid=45) is indeed recorded through component using a HDPVR on ps3's Socom Confrontation. Rendered at 720p as well.

I know this because it is my video/website :) and i own both the HDPVR and Hava Platinum.

Hauppage is the best u can get right now for the price to record in HD 720p/1080i and i highly recommend it.

Can you add a voice over or special effects to the video you reocord on the PS3 with HDPVR using a program like Movie Maker?

    Yes you can.

The HDPVR's software creates a hidef video file which you can then convert to whatever you like, or WMV in your case which you can open with movie maker to add effects to.
