    Hi

Ive been trying to burn the Recovery DVD's. Ive wasted about 4dvd's already because it keeps failing after the DVD has been written on.

When it is verifying an error will come up saying it failed. It then asks me to insert a new DVD-R +/- . When i do insert a new one, it starts continuing the verification proccess instead of starting over again. I waited over 1 hour and not a single thing moved. The cd drive was stuck/busy i couldnt even get the thing out or shut it down, i had to hold on power button.

Im not too sure what type of dvd's i have but im guessing its a single layer since it said i needed 2 dvd's. Im goin to be purchasing a dual layer DVD today to see if that would work, since only 1 DVD is required for it

When i insert the failed dvd on my desktop comp, everythign seems to be there. Except the Recovery DVD wizard wont let me continue to burn the 2nd DVD because the first one apparently failed. I never had problems backing up the SWsetup drivers.

    Any idea guys?
    Cheers,

What is the brand of your blank DVD's? It might be the problem.

DVD+R is the one it likes. The Fuji's I bought worked well.

To be honest with you im not sure. I threw away the spindles cover. Its a printable DVD disc which means it doesnt show what brand or type. I just 'borrowed" these discs from work, with no chance of return lol.

Ive used them a few times before with no problems. I also used them last night to make an extra backup of the drivers and it worked fine.

Ill be buying a different brand today

I had a similar problem with my VAIO. Turned out to be the drive itself. I sent it in to get a new one installed and now it works great.

That said, you should try BIOS resets, driver rollbacks, etc. before you send your computer in.

Any specific brand/type recommendations of DVD to buy?

Im not really sure what the +/- means im guessing it has something to do with the layers. Ive read on an article here that cheap media has a bigger chance of being a defective disk. Also that DVD-R is more compatible

Its a lightscribe DVD drive btw

There was a DVD war like the HDDVD/Bluray war. Some people liked DVD-R, others liked DVD+R. HP was in the +R camp, so those will work better. I'm not sure why it makes a difference, but I couldn't even burn the discs without +R. Rewritables won't work either.

The drive and computer is fine, ive done all the tests and stress tests and everything seems to be in shape. Like i said earlier i have used the drive to burn a backup of my drivers folder using the same spindle of DVD's with no problems so i dont think its the drive. Im guessing its the program that doesnt like the DVDs

Is there any other way to create it?

I know it's picky about the discs because it is burning what's supposed to be a very secure backup of the system. The DVDs I got that worked were from CVS, so you can probably find some at your local 24hr store. As I said, mine were Fuji DVD+R and worked well.

I called up HP earlier to ask for the Vista Disks and they wont give it to me, their tech support keep telling me i can just use the recovery disk. Even though ive been telling him for 10mins that i wanna do a clean install without the bloatware, he just keeps telling me to go to the Control Panel and uninstall it from there. Its like he was reading a flow chart that goes in a circle

They really need to stop outsourcing technical support jobs to other countries. Their incompetence is starting to get to me

Now im double screwed.. No recovery disks or a Vista Upgrade Disk. I dont know how im gonna be able to do a clean install now. I cant get a hold on the Vista DVD anywhere here in Australia. Hopefully i can solve the recovery disk problem tonight by using new brand of DVD's

Arent manufactuers or suppliers supposed to always provide you of the OS's OEM Install Disk since you payed for it?

Will any version of the Vista DVD work? I might be able to borrow one of a friend and just use the activation key i already backed up

All version of the Vista DVD are the same. Retail, OEM, Anytime Upgrade, they are IDENTICAL. There ARE 2 DVDs, one is for 64bit, the other for 32bit. So just make sure you have the 32 or 64 bit one, depending on the one you want.

I was just about to ask that question if u could use any Vista Disc to do the clean install in your guide

I finally solved both problems... The new blank DVD+R worked fine and i got to create my Recovery DVD's successfully. I guess my dvd drive doesnt like some - discs

As for Vista.. Im borrowing my girlfriends friend's copy this weekend.. hopefully the clean install will go well..

I also installed the latest gfx drivers from laptopvideo2go. It increased my Experience index by .4 points. Hopefully it goes way higher when i do a clean install. The drivers messed up the Chess Titans graphics.. u cant see the board anymore

yes that is probably the problem. Alot of people had the same problem aswell. Buy +R's

Try any brand of DVD+R's. Buy a 5 pack or something and it should work fine

I'm pretty sure the documentation says that you must use +Rs. Check on the sheet that came in the box. I had some -RWs, and it didn't like those, so then I got +Rs and they worked.

Dont Worry. Same thing happened with me also. I wasted 2 DVDs before finding the solution. Simply download the updated HP recovery manager Software from the HP support website and yo! your problem is gone.
