Anyone that has the actual recovery disc from HP...

Is this a standard Vista disc or does it have all the crapware?

They are sending me one because my laptop cannot create a recovery disc. It says that I have no cd/dvd creating capabilities in the recovery disc creator. I am thinking this is because I have the blu-ray player in my 9700t. I just assume that it is not compatible with the software. I have used it to make cds and dvds. Thanks in advance for the info.

The cd's will have all the bloatware installed, it restores the computer the way it was when you first got it from HP. From there you can uninstall the bloat or get a vista anywhere cd and do a clean install (check the stickies).

    Thanks...
I have been to this site before, but it always had me upgrading. Thanks alot!
What would I have to do to upgrade to 64 bit? Would my old product code work?

Here is my step by step
I called support and told them I was having an issue creating recovery cds and they had me do multiple things...
    uninstall and reinstall drive…
    check for updates…
turn off, unplug remove battery, hold power button for 1 min to drain capacitors
    Then…
She said would you like to format the drive using the extra partition and I said there was no chance in hell…
Then she said it still works so I should just call if it fails within the warranty and they will send me the discs…

This is when I raised my voice and said there was no way I was going to wait for my pc to fail and that if I had an issue I wanted to fix it asap not call request discs and wait around for them to show up. She put me on hold and talked to her supervisor and told me they were going to ship my discs at no cost to me and gave me an order confirmation.
    50 mins on phone total

You would need to purchase a new product key for the 64bit version you want (not sure exactly how it works with anytime upgrade)

Is that for all the consumer HP models? If so that really sucks :( The business line recovery disks are all clean installs of Vista/XP.

Pretty lame for HP to do that if it's true :\

Its true. HP does it on their consumer lines since they can. But if they were to do that with their business partners, they would be losing customers. Companies want the most productivity on their machines. But its getting worse for their consumer lines. A year ago HP used to ship vista anytime discs with their pavilion machines. I think Dell still does. Then around March/May 2007 they ship with ZERO discs.. only the ability to burn one copy from the bloatware image :D

Your 32bit key will work fine on 64-bit. You will only need a new key if your upgrading different versions (ultimate, premium, basic) not architechture (32bit-64bit)

They have actually stopped selling the Windows Anytime Upgrade and will completely stop at the 20th Feb.

I recommend not buying crapware recovery discs from HP and try get a hold off a WAU disc for a clean install. There is a stickied clean install guide by Orev, you can download the image of this disc if you are bothered too.

Yes your 32bit key will work, just use orev's Activation Backup & restore program and your freshly installed 64bit will be instantly activated.

Im going to 64bit aswell as soon as Service pack 1 comes out and proven to be 110% stable. Which releases in mid-march. The only reason im waiting is i dont wanna do a clean install as of yet and im not in a hurry. According to benchmarks of 32 v's 64bit vista ultimate, 64bit was overall 10% faster. I really wanna take advantage of this.

Guys get a hold of a WAU or 64bit install disc/copy as soon as you can. This will be handy later down the road.

What does Microsoft intend to do by stopping the sale of WAU DVDs? How would people install Vista once they are moved out?

I WISH I HAD READ THIS BEFORE I ORDERED BOTH DISCS!!

"There is no such thing as a "Home Premium Vista" disc, or an "Ultimate Vista" disc!!!! ALL VISTA DISCS CONTAIN ALL VERSIONS OF VISTA. "

EDIT: I guess there is a difference between 32 bit and 64 bit discs...???..?

WAU disks were only there so people can upgrade their versions of Vista to a better version. It was never really intended for us to use for doing a clean install to avoid bloatware. You will need to use the recovery disk since laptops dont come with a windows vista disk

"There is no such thing as a "Home Premium Vista" disc, or an "Ultimate Vista" disc!!!! ALL VISTA DISCS CONTAIN ALL VERSIONS OF VISTA. "

Yes this is correct. The serial key you enter when installing is what unlocks the version your purchased. If you install another version, it will have a 30day period and it will lock up after that unless you purchase it

I ordered mine on 2/5 and it still isn't here AND they took my money out of my account.
I placed my order before I realized I could download it and use Vlite to create my own Vista x64 disc. Oh well, lesson learned.

(Post updated to reference a better quote...)

I ordered the 32-bit WAU DVD on Feb 2 and received it today (Feb 16).

The DVD label states "This disc contains 32-bit software only." to confirm a previous post.

I didn't order the 64-bit WAU DVD. MS doesn't intend you to "upgrade" from, for example, 32-bit Home Premium to 64-bit Home Premium:

Can I upgrade from a 32-bit version of Windows to a 64-bit version of Windows?

No. If you are currently running a 32-bit version of Windows, you can only perform an upgrade to another 32-bit version of Windows. Similarly, if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows Vista, you can only perform an upgrade to another 64-bit version of Windows Vista.

I think the above is clearer than what I originally quoted below:

U pgrading a 32-bit operating system to a 64-bit operating system If you purchase a 64-bit upgrade version of Windows Vista with the intention of installing on a computer that is running a 32-bit operating system, you must install Windows Vista by starting the computer from the 64-bit Vista installation DVD.

Important Do not remove the previous operating system before you start the Windows Vista installation. This is because Windows Vista Setup has to verify that your current operating system license supports the installation of a 64-bit upgrade version.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932795/en-us

It seems that others have a different experience. Maybe I should order the 64-bit WAU just to have it handy before MS discontinues WAU. (Are they really going to discontinue it?)

The HP dv9700t I ordered will be here early next week, so I plan to do a clean install of 32-bit Home Premium.

Your product key will work on the same version of Vista, 32bit or 64bit. It is not an "upgrade" to change to 64bit, it is a clean install of the same version. Upgrade only refers to changing from Premium to Ultimate... changing architecture is a lateral move.

I called Microsoft last week asking for a 64bit disc because i wanted to upgrade. I told him i already had a 32bit premium licence.

He told me the only way was to buy a vista 64 disc with a NEW licence, i told him to gtfo.

I aint paying $150 for a licence i already have!

Seems like they don't know what they are talking about. Microsoft themselves make the 64bit editions available on their web site: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/editions/64bit.mspx The only problem is that only technically applies to retail versions, not OEM ones, but there are no controls in place (in Vista) to control that.
