What happens to this feature after upgrading to Vista? Is is still fully functional like before except it restores a fresh copy of the OS with Vista instead of XP? Any other differences or loss of features? I have found this VERY useful a few times during the first 6 months of ownership and have actually done a full restore a couple of times to resolve issues that came up due to corrupt application installations.

I would have to think long and hard before upgrading to Vista if it means this functionality will be lost.

    Thank you

It wont work. Vista replaces the XP MBR and so you wont be able to start the recovery process from the partition. If you want to install Vista, then make sure you have burnt the XP recovery discs before proceeding.

    ditto what miner said.

Also, if you use the HP Upgrade Utility (which isn't necessary but is the only HP approved way to perform the upgrade) then the utility will delete your Restore Partition and Quickplay Partition as part of the process.

Thanks for the replies and info. I suspected as much. Losing the quick play partition really stinks as it allows others to load and play dvd's without actually letting them into the laptop (logging them in). I have since read over HP's Vista upgrade guide and it looks like the main reason given for eliminating the recovery and quick play partitions is to give Vista MORE hard drive space!!??. I have a 120gig HD and that ain't enough?! I'll be putting this "free upgrade" on hold for a while!

I have upgraded my lappy from xp to vista. my recovery partition got deleted but the space which was alloted to it was not added to the primary hard disk drive (i.e. c drive).

So I would like to know where is the space of this recovery partition gone and how can I add this space to the primary drive (i.e. c :) or how do i make a new recovery partition for windows vista as made by HP.

You will have to use a third party partiton manager like Partition Magic or GParted to merge the empty space with your C:.

Wouldn't he be able to use the extend volume wizard in the 'Computer Management' tools?

Thanks for the info,I was thinking of doing the same thing but didn't want to lose the restore feature that came with XP.Since I upgraded to a 120gig HD I downloaded a free program called XXCLONE that copied the original hard drive with the restore feature to the new hard drive.I split the drive into equal partitions and bit the bullet and got Vista ultimate.I don't know if HP will upgrade Vista to a virgin partition or not. From what you are saying they wont give you Vista without taking xp.Is that what I take on this??

Hp's recovery options will be available, but not easily obtained. for those wishing to uninstall their vista upgraded computers you can do this with the recovery partition. it will NOT work with rebooting and pressing f11. you have to reboot in safe mode by pressing f8. this is the only way to get full administrator rights...trust me. once booted up in safe mode goto start -programs -system recovery "pc recovery". this will give you two options: 1- recover from microsoft system restore. or 2- use pc recovery. USE PC RECOVERY! this will then reboot your computer into hp's recovery partition and follow the options to restore you computer to factory settings. viola full removal of windows vista and back to good ole xp that came with your computer.
