    Hi,

    I've had a dv9700t for a while now, and one of my biggest problems is the amount of heat that emanates from it all the time! Even when I'm just using it for simple non-intensive tasks, it seems to be very warm, particularly the trackpad, and the keyboard as well to a lesser degree. I'm used to desktops, and while the cramped keyboard on the dv9700t bothers me a lot less than I thought it would, the heat was completely unexpected. Is there nothing I can do short of attaching an external mouse?

    Thanks!

    -Check ur fans if they go on at all or not. A BIOS update might fix this.

    -Check load on CPU. If you have bloatware installed, it will put more load on the proccessor which makes it run hotter.

    -Try cleaning the fans if necessary

    Just buy one of those cooling pads for notebooks. I would get a well-known brand but nothing too pricing. Something at the range between 20-30 is sufficient. Anything else above that price range I think is overkill. It will help reduce the heat immensely. Get a good brand and you won't even hear a lot of fan noise at all. Targus makes pretty good ones, it keeps my dad's Intel Core 2 Duo Toshiba notebook cool all around.

    @flipfire:
    I did a clean install of Vista Ultimate and then Kubuntu Linux, and I then replaced Vista with XP Pro SP2 when I got around to integrating the SATA drivers so the XP CD would find the HDD. I don't have any bloatware on either XP or Kubuntu.

    @sendmarksmail:
    Yeah, I was thinking about buying one of those. Thanks for the advice on the pricing!

    Whats your temperature readouts? Use coretemp or HWmonitor (speed fan seems to be innacurate)

    I use a notebook stand from Targus, which only cost me $15 at walmart. It works really well. it allows my laptop to breathe and because of this, it does not get hot at all.

    Hi - just out of interest - what speed is the fan running at all the time and does it kick into high rpm's very often?

    I have a Turion x2 TL-60 that hits 70c alot and the fan is always on a very low almost silent rpm until it hits about 55-58c then its spins up alot (which is most of the time actually!)

    do you use HWmonitor to measure your temps?

    Try running on battery and see if that helps. There *might* be a batch of bad power bricks out there, just a theory/WAG at this point. This theory assumes that you run the same clock speeds on battery that you would plugged in.

    Actually what's interesting about that is that on Kubuntu, it was restricting the clock speed to 800 MHz all the time, so I turned off the restricter. Maybe having it run at 2 GHz is what's causing the problem? I don't remember specifically if the heat problem was there before I had it go at 2 GHz, but I'm inclined to believe it was.

    But here are the numbers after it's been on for for another 7 minutes, without anything but Firefox running. Is it normal for the temperatures to go even higher after leaving it on for a while longer, even without all those programs running? And I know it gets much hotter than this, from how hot it feels right now on the trackpad.

    Those temps look pretty close to what mine have been running.

    Hi,
    I have dv6500z with TL-60. Temps are hovering between 50 - 60C in normal working conditions. While buring/encoding dvd, they rose to 70C. When i elevate the laptop from back using book, temps went down at least by 5C.
    I have 65nm processor. Good idea is to get some laptop mat to keep the laptop elevated at back side. Any suggestions?

    @rustum:
    I looked around, and Newegg is carrying a cooling pad at a decent price with a good rating: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834999336 . It supports up to 17" notebooks, so it'll work for your 15.4" as well, I'm guessing. It tilts the notebook, so you should get the same effect as from using a book.

    I don't see any fan speeds in HWmonitor....is SpeedFan OK for this, or is it inaccurate as flipfire said?

    I'll give this a shot. I haven't played with the battery much, but I'll have to test how long it lasts and then charge it to 40% and stick it in the fridge ;)

    That looks like a decent one. However, I think that cooling pad from Bytecc is only good if you use it on a desk. It seems painful if you're using it on your lap. If you plan to use it on your lap, you might want to get something else. Otherwise it's great if it's just for tabletop use!

    Yeah, that doesn't look too comfortable to have on your lap. But I don't think any tilted pad would be necessary on your lap, as you can tilt your legs to provide the same effect (at least as far as the ergonomics go - I don't know about how well it would cool on your lap without a cooling pad).

    Core Idle should be around 42-46c after about 10mins

    When surfing the net while listening to music it should be around 50-55c

    Gaming will go from 55-70c

    If your processor temps are fine, it could be your harddrive as it is located just below near the pad
