Ok.... I know only a few of us have received their Envy 17 3D, and I know those who have them are busy testing them out, playing with them, etc.... but...I was hoping as I am sure many out there are too, that those who have this laptop would upload videos to youtube so we can all see what's it all about. Yes, we have seen the HP videos, and other professional reviewers, but NO ONE, and I mean NO ONE (real consumer) has posted any videos of the Envy 17 3D of anykind. No unboxing, no playing, to FPS, nothing.  :(

So yeah, if people with HD cameras could please upload to youtube regarding this amazing machine, I would thank you. Share the love! Lol. :p ;) Thanks in advance.

P.S. Don't even ask me how many times I've gone on Youtube to check for new vids, but nothing..ugh. --- Videos are up, so kindly ignore above statement, I will leave it for reference of my angst. Lol. Enjoy the vids below guys, and please feel free to keep adding more!!! Thanks. :)

of course, i only play such games if i can max them out. ok crysis will probably run on high, not gamer/very high, but rest maxed.

but by the time i get it, there certainly already will be plenty of user-made videos, since i think its gonna come somewhere mid-december or just before christmas.

I can kinda understand where you are coming from. I feel sometimes 3D does not work for several reasons.

    1. Glasses are not comfortable, too dark, coloring affects movies/games...etc..

    2. The movie itself could have used inferior 3D technology to produce it in the first place so then the effects aren't worth very much in terms of impact. I believe if the movie is done with the proper equipment, and good direction, and proper effects, there is no reason that the WOW factor woud not be there.

Again, I understand because a few of the last Hollywood movies I've seen in 3D in the IMAX sucked. Some of my fav 3D is from Disney World/Epcot rides in Orlando Florida...fun times. :p

Also, I suspect that the 3D will work amazingly for the games....at least I hear good things. We are in for a treat guys!!!! Woot!!!

P.S. Let's see some vids already, first poster on youtube gets a big, loud cheer!

I'm pretty sure most people who jumped on the Envy 3D aren't exactly die-hard 3D fanatics. I think we were mostly people looking at the Envy 17 who saw that the Envy 17 3D was basically the same price, and jumped on it. It was like the 3D was an added free bonus.

Personally, I think 3D is ok (don't love or hate it), but like I said, that wasn't the selling point of this laptop for me, and I'm sure it wasn't for otherwise.

i actually didnt aim for the envy 17 3d because of 3d, but because the lack of my preferable hardware configurations of the elitebooks in europe forced me to choose the envy.

my first choice was the elitebook 8540w with the firepro m5800, 740/840qm cpu and the dc2 display. but since there is no model with such a configuration available in europe, neither one can pre-configure ones own model like in the us, i had to either take an elitebook that i wouldnt be satisfied with (either old dx10 nvidia quadro or an i5 cpu), or abort my now almost 4 year long love with the elitebooks (formerly hp compaq 8-series). although i am now actually using an 8440p and an 8540w, the envy is going to be my new main desktop replacement.

then the envy 17 3d came out and that was the only notebook from the hp consumer line that i would accept, mainly because of the 5850m and the obviously really great hp brightview 3d display. but not because its capable of 3d, but its 120hz.

however, after reading some of the really promising reviews of users already having tried gaming @ 3d, i think this is gonna be a nice extra feature. i just hope hp release a bios update that reverts the 5850m's clocks to its stock clocks.. and this doesnt fry the inside of the envy :p

Running recovery discs, then video if I can find the damn cam lol

Initial impressions are great, no issues. The box it ships in is bigger to accommodate the 3D glasses, but the internal Envy box is same as standard E17. Those of us who have had both versions will notice that instantly.

    More to follow!

with minimum 45fps you should definitely be able to set shadows to high and most other settings from mid to high without having the fps drop below 30. give it a try, i am sure theres still a lot of spare room! maybe for a single-player game or bfbc2 in single player mode its still optimal, whereas for a multiplayer game 40 should be kept as the minimum, but still, performance is what were interested in! :D

I think I viewed armoured's vid several times... I can't get enough how sweet the gameplay/graphics are... we've come such a long way from Quake II, which back then made leaps and bounds.... armoured, did you try playing it in 3D using the Tridef drivers? They list it as one of their supported games. Does playing on 3D really cut frame rate by half?

    http://tridef.com/ignition/3d-games.html

So I hear 3D makes all these games more fun....come on Fedex..come on....

Thus far the best 3d content I've been able to find was an IMAX 3D under the sea documentary. The content itself was so so but the 3d was definitely done well and wasn't that cheap 3D diorama that a lot of the cheaply made ones are. Most of the other stuff I've been able to find hasn't looked all that great but as more content becomes available I'm sure that will change.

I have been having ghosting issues with stuff bleeding across to the wrong eye slightly and though it isn't getting any better, I am kinda getting used to it. In some things it's totally fine but things with certain color schemes make it unbearable.

Well here is my first video of Streetfighter IV on the Envy 3D. I show the improvement in FPS when switching to 120 Hz instead of 60 Hz.
Then I show the drop in FPS when using the Tridef 3D for 3D mode. Pretty much had to drop resolution from x1080 to x768 @60Hz to get a more desirable 56 FPS.
I liked using this game because of the easily configured benchmark and setting modes. I could switch back and forth seamlessly and lag free.
Next game up is probably going to be "Black Ops".

why do you have vsync on?

it is quite logical that with vsync on and a 60hz/fps cap the average (and max!) fps will be far below those @ 120hz/fps cap, since vsync makes the game-fps align with the monitors hz (fps), so there is no "room" upwards! so the maximum achieveable fps @ 60hz vsync is 60fps; @ 120hz vsync > 120fps!

turn off vsync and then try again, youll get far higher fps! im quite sure there is absolutely no need for vsync on an envy 17..

I will definitely make sure that's off from now on.
I'm still a noob when it comes to pc game settings
I don't suppose you know optimal settings for "black ops" do you?

optimal settings are everything maxed out and "on" :p (however, vsync actually isnt a graphics quality setting, its just a way to solve some minor problems, but these arent likely to occur on the envy 3d's 120hz display; so if you dont know you need it, you dont, so keep it off)

but the envy should definitely be able to run black ops with everything maxed out, except anti-aliasing and maybe shadows, but for single-player even the shadows can be maxed and one should test how it runs with AA. for single-player gaming most games should run very well at about 25-30+ fps.

OMG, I turned Vsync off and it was hitting approx 90 fps - what a difference that makes.
In "Black Ops" I guess its not called "VSync" but labeled "Sync every frame" instead.

I'm gonna have to delete that Streetfighter IV video and replace it with another one, because that first vid made me look stupid. Not to mention making the ENVY 17 not look too good etiher.
Anyways I was getting 90 fps and up until I turned on Anitaliasing then it dropped down to the high 50s fps or so.
Playing "Black Ops" without the Sync helped out tremendously as well. The game runs in the upper 50s fps without AA and then upper 40s fps with 2x AA (1080res).
Video being posted tonight. Will try to do a 3D version too.

Hey KJ, been having SSD issues thus no vids. I started taking some vid for illustration to the Clean Install procedure provided in The Lounge when Win 7 install could not see my SSD. I feel like such a tard for having these issues, however I think its my drive I got from dushe-egg after reading recent rash of drive failures.

Glad you liked it. If you have a HD vid cam, I do hope when you get yours you'll post a vid or 2 for us? Infact, there are still no unboxing videos for the Envy 17 3D....so if you were to do one, yours would be the very first unboxing....! :p Well, I can't wait to hear once you open your box and tell us how you feel about it....erm, hopefully in a vid. And no, I don't have a vid cam otherwise I'd have posted..lol

freespace303 has just brought this thread back to life thanks to another new video, make that 3 new ones!!! :D So far he gave us an unboxing, a first time boot up and now 2x3D game benchmarks. In fact, these are the first 3D gaming vids on YouTube for the Envy 17 3D as far as I'm aware.

freespace303 good stuff, thanks. ;) Now we have a better idea of which games are playable on 3D mode...hope to see more.

    Note: First page updated.

Bumped up for nielo and other new members who might be interested. ;)

P.S. I imagine that this thread will also be updated when vids of the Envy 17 3D SB edition will be in our hands.
