Just got a DM4, and I was thinking of replacing the dvd drive with a second hard drive. Maybe using a small ssd as my boot drive and the 500 gb drive for storage.

A few Laptops have kits out that let are essentially a hard drive caddy that fits where the DVD drive is. They even sell a universal one, but I dont think it would look right on the dm4 because the plastic covering on the drive is a weird shape.

    Anyone try this?

This is exactly what I'm planning to do with my DM4-1050ea. I've just been trying to remove the cdrom to make sure it is SATA and to check to width for the adapter. The service manual makes it sound easy to remove the cdrom but mine seems to get stuck have way out.

I'm think about one of these: -
    http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalog?hl=en&biw=1362&bih=537&q=ocz+vertex+2e&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=1159323153949308032&ei=m3fhTLmSN9SChQec7oifDQ&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CB0Q8wIwAA#scoring=p|start=10

with Windows 7 on and my 500GB 7200rpm western digital drive in the caddy. I use this laptop for work too and work be great for cloning laptop hard drive to new drives as i could put one it the caddy/adapter and the other in esata. Should speed things up a lot.

Did you get around to this? I'm going to have another go at removing the CDROM. The bezel on the cdrom comes off so this should go on the new adapter so it should look just the same as before?
