Has anyone here tried replacing the stock HDD that they have received with their notebooks with an aftermarket one?
Here's the thing. I installed a 2nd HDD in my DV9700t, and I noticed when I installed it that the cover for that HDD doesn't have any venting. At the time I was wondering about heat issues. However, I worried for nothing because the new HDD, without any vented cover, runs a lot cooler than the stock HDD.
Both HDD's are Western Digital, though the 320 gig I bought is a Gen 2, while the 250 gig is just a Gen 1.
I'm just wondering if I replaced that 250 gig, would I see cooler temps, or is there something else that is keeping it running warmer. It sits under the left palm rest, and the slight warmth from that palmrest irritates me sometimes.
I am considering replacing it with another 320 gig and using it as an external storage drive. or possibly waiting and getting a 500 gig when Western Digital finally puts them out (I'm a WD fan, I've never had one of their drives fail on me like I have with Seagate, Maxtor... Probably just luck of the draw, but why mess with a good thing right?)

Tom's Hardware has measurements for idle power and maximum power for many 2.5" HDDs including those WD HDDs. However, while the charts indicate that the 320GB uses more power, what you are seeing suggests less since the 320GB is cooler.
Did you clone the old HDD or do a clean install? If the latter, maybe it is nicely defragmented at the moment which would reduce the amount of effort needed to read and write.

Hi,
I've changed out more notebook HDD's then I care to remember.
Yes, you will notice a temp decrease, with the new HDD, as the newer technology or "Gen 2" as you mentioned(mobility HDD's) run cooler, then the first Gen of SATA mobility drives. You'll also see performance gains as the first Gen were ony SATA 150 Gen 2 are SATA 300

PS The new Gen 2 mobility HDD's also use much less power so batterys last longer
Replace the main HD with another... New Temps?
