I am looking into replacing my Hitachi GWA-4080N optical drive with a dual layer drive. The laptop is a dv1040. HP will sell me one for a mere $380! I can find laptop optical drives at places like Newegg.com. Users report they fit various HP and Compaq laptops. Is there any way cross-reference the various optical drives against each other? Is there any way to determine if the various units at places like Newegg will fit?
Thank you

the dual layer drive that came with my compaq v2000 is a pioneer is DVR-K15, i assume that will fit the HP too. $380 seems a lot.
