I opted for the HP DL burner with LightScribe when I bought my laptop. Since September of last year, I have tried to burn 6 DVDs and all have failed. I am starting to think its the burner since I have tried 4-5 different burning software packages.
So I decided to remove the burner and try to have HP replace it (still a few months of warranty left). The stupid screw won't turn and got easily ruined (the socket is losing shape). I don't know what to do, I am at my wits end. I am moving out of my home and my parents are taking over my desktop and I absolutely need a working burner (for work and play).
Does anyone know how I can remove the screw? Also, what are the chances that HP will replace the burner? I can't ship my computer out because I can't be without a laptop.
Thanks for any help or advice.

Does anyone have a link to the firmware for the DVD drive? I'd like to give that a shot.

Did you try deleting the ide drivers? Windows will find and re-install them when re-booted. Try some different discs as well.

Also, I don't know how picky the burner is but I know that disks from the exact same spindle worked for a friend. Is it possible to have a 100% failure rate just because the burner doesn't like the disks? The disks in question are Staples brand, CMC E01.
EDIT: I'll be honest, I don't know how to remove the IDE drivers. Please tell me how? Will I need the Windows Installation or the Drivers disc to re-install them? -

I'd bet on the Staples brand blanks not being compatible with your drive. Try one of the better brands like Verbatim. If those don't work, THEN you have a problem.
Flashing in newer drive firmware, if available, is also a good idea.
Go to Control Panel | System | Hardware tab | Device Manager if you want to mess with the IDE drivers. -
I tried a different media and I used a can of air to clean the lens. No go, I have another coaster. I need to try removing the IDE drivers, contact HP for new firmware or a new drive I guess.
Can someone please tell me how I can remove the IDE drivers? I don't want to mess up my laptop so I am not experimenting on my own.
Thanks in advance. -
CMCs are not considered very good. Taiyo Yudens are the best, but I would concur that Verbatims are a good second choice. What drive is it? You can look it up on VideoHelp.com to see what has worked for others.
