If I borrow a friends retail version of Windows Vista Home Premium to do a clean install, would my serial number that is under my laptop with the preinstalled version of Windows Vista Home Premium work with the retail version of it? Or does anyone know how to do a clean install with the recovery cd's?

Yes, the key which u input detrmine weather it is am OEM version or retail version. so if u put the Home Premium key under ur laptop, it will be an OEM version

just put the recovery cd in the drive, start the laptop boot from the cd (set this in the bios if its not set already) and follow the instructions. if HP recovery is the same then a clean install will be called a destructive recovery or something like that whereby the drive is formatted and vista is then installed.

doesn't the recovery cd partition the hard drive to have the C:/ and D:/ for recovery? also doesn't it preload all the bloatware that is on it? i just want vista installed then let me put all the drivers in.
Retail version of Windows Vista Home Premium ?
