I am thinking about purchasing an hp from costco. I have heard about the 6 month return policy, does anyone know how that works? Because if i buy one, and another cool model comes out i might want to return it, to upgrade.

You can take your laptop back to your local Costco, within six months, and they'll refund your money, including shipping!

I ordered and received the dv1000t six weeks ago. I now decided to get the dv2000z instead, for several reasons. (Love the dv1000t, but I prefer the look of the new model, plus it comes with 1.3mp camera, built in microphones, latchless closure. better video card and other features.)

Costco is great! One post said he brought his laptop back to Costco for return, and recieved full cash within five minutes!

    Great company!

Thats why there is now only a six month return policy instead of lifetime like it used to be.

I hope you guys are not abusing Costco's policy and ruin it for everyone else that really needs it. Costco isn't a pawn shop.

Well, their policy is "six months return, for any reason"... so, if someone is returning their laptop for NO reason, I guess they're abusing Costco's policy.

Before I purchased my dv1000t, I called Costco online, and spoke with a rep to confirm their policy. I asked her "so, if for any reason, if I simply change my mind, I can return the laptop I purchase from Costco within six months?" and she said "you sound surprised"...

I told her I was surprised, that that is a very generous return policy.

"You think that's good?"... she asked... "On our large items, such as furniture, the return policy is lifetime!"

"So I can call Costco after 18 years of owning a sofa I purchased from you guys, and tell you I've decided I don't like the color, and Costco will take it back?"

Her response was "Not only will we take back the sofa and return ALL of your purchase price, but we'll come to your home to pick it up, at no charge!"

Fact is, I purchased from Costco because I was worried about getting a laptop, and shortly thereafter, finding out that the laptop now comes with a faster processor, or upgraded graphics, or a new model, or is available for substantially less or whatever.

Sure enough, HP, six weeks after my purchase, announced a new design on the dv1000t (which, by the way, is a two year old design), the dv2000. Scratch resistant lid, included camera and dual mics, new options on processors, etc.

This is exactly why I purchased from Costco, and NOT from HP, or some other source.

Also, I've mentioned and recommended Costco on bulletin boards, to friends and family. Bottom line is, Costco got a sale out of me they wouldn't have necessarily gotten without their generous return policy, and recruited me as a great spokesperson for their stores. I'm sure they have figured out how much it costs them to deal with returns, compared to the increase in sales.

Actually no, I work for costco and I have heard that many customers are abusing costco return policy. People buy laptops and wait for the next gen to come out is consider abusing. If you have intention to buy it and wait for something new to come out then it is definitely immoral/absuing. You can tell yourself that you're not abusing their system so you can feel better than that's fine.

Hmm... could you explain why it's immoral/abusive?

Common sense says that it's not something you should do - but common sense also says that there's no way Costco should have a policy like this, and yet, they do! The policy is pretty clear when it states that you can return the laptop for any reason within the alotted period of time - and it DOESN'T state that "you shouldn't take advantage of this as if it were a free rental service".

Under normal circumstances, I would feel terrible about it, but Costco's policy is Costco's policy... so, hey, free couch for 20 years! I would probably feel bad about it anyway, but there's no rational reason to, if I'm understanding the policy correctly.

That's just my opinion and like I said, if it makes you feel better to tell yourself that you're not abusing(immoral) costco system then do so.

They will only take the laptop if there is some damage or something wrong that they can tell on it.

Pulling the "well its not starting fast enough" will not warrent a return.

    Nope.

Read their return policy, and if you are really intersted, call them up to confirm, but you can return your laptop for ANY reason, even that you've changed your mind. Six months, lifetime for large ticket items.

    That's Costco's policy...
