Not what you think.... i love it its great, its just that with all this hoopla about santa rosa and the fact that my 21 day trial period is not over i decided to send this back.. not to mention the fact it has small impressions along the face(near/around touchpad) minor.. but annoying to look at. So those of you who were along with me on the purchase of their laptop around April 13 will you keep yours or will you make the jump to santa rosa? Also can anyone give me a more detailed preview of Santa Rosa.. its would be much appreciated thanks in advance.

so far the only dv9000 laptops we know of in the santa rosa range appear to have only integrated and not dedicated graphics

It's a good idea. Return it. The next generation of laptops are available in just a few weeks. There is little reason to buy yesterday's technology unless you got it really cheap.

My 21 day return is over on May 10, so I (hopefully) will be able to see what they have to offer, then can decide from there.

From what day does the 21 day return period take effect ? In other words, day of shipping, day of delivery, etc.

Mine was delivered April 23, so if it is the delivery day I potentially could return until May 14. I like my dv9000t and got it at a nice price (T7200, 7600 Go, WSXGA+, 160GB, Lightscribe, Bluetooth, 2GB, high capacity battery, total under $1300 including tax after the discount coupon). But I could really use the fingerprint reader on the new model, something I wasn't expecting it to have. I probably could live with Intel's new integrated graphics, although it would be better to have a 8600 Go. If it won't be offered initially, I may keep mine and resell it later, at the price I paid I won't be taking much of a loss...

This info is listed right on the HP customer service page. Go to customer service, then returns and exchanges. 21 day return policy is from the day you received the system.

Well, I've done it. Went through the return process, they emailed me a link to fedex to print out the return label, and I'm set. I figured that even if I have to wait some more, if I don't it will just keep eating at me. I think the dv9000t is a great machine, but I don't want to be left with something too old in a year.

If you do it, they will try to sell you something new, because they are motivated by getting you to buy a different system/remain a customer. Unless they tell you they will send you something with the geforce 8, don't do it!

Are you sending it back because you don't like the design or because of the technology?

If it is the design, the dv9500t will be exactly the same build aside from the restyled Imprint Finish.

If it is for Santa Rosa, the benches floating around are not showing any real performance advantage over Napa. You are also still limited to 2Gb of ram as before.

If you want the fingerprint reader & 4965 wireless, then I guess it would be worth a swap for you. But that is about the only thing it would add over the previous model as of right now.

There's something about buying a computer, then having a new model come out 2 weeks later. It's just really annoying. If nothing else, you can feel confident that you bought something that isn't going to be out of date in a month from now. Maybe it's not the best reason, but it is a factor.

I have my fingers crossed that the dv9500 with nvidia cards will have a bluray/hddvd drive, and more importantly, a 1920x1200 screen.

The improvement that would matter most to me is battery life. According to Cnet, the unit they tested lasted 2 hrs and 40 minutes. I barely get 2 hrs out of my dv9207.

I believe that cnet made a false assumption about the battery life because they tested it with DVD playback. The unit they used contained a geforce 8600M. The 8600M contains logic that specifically takes much less power when playing a DVD. I sent a letter to the editor about it, but haven't heard anything yet.

Their test is fine with me because I tested mine playing dvd also. How much involvement does the GPU have in dvd playing? I always thought it was things like the display and dvd drive and consume a lot of power. But I could be wrong.

I returned the machine and got my money back minus the $50 of inconvienience pay they took back..im not a gamer but i think im gonna wait till june/july.. so i can get the 8400... the main selling points to me where the new wireless technology.. and the fact that it is a new machine.. why get last seasons..i will have no gripes if i buy a machine and 4 months later they come out with a new model but i think i would have been an idiot to pay 1800 for last years piece when the new one is around the corner.....quick question if i decide to stick throught it and wait another month.. what can i expect from the dv9500.. or should i just hop on it now.. I dont need blu ray.. got a ps3 for that.. and im not a cpu gamer..

Well, whats most important is what you want, so if you feel the need to have the 8400M, then wait for it. You've already done the hard part by getting rid of the dv9000t. Everyone seems to say the same thing, that the nvidia cards will show up for the HPs in June. Not really that long to wait if it is what you want. :)

As for feeling like an idiot if you pay $1800 for last years model, not neccessarily. If I had to have a semi-powerful discrete graphics solution right now in a Pavilion, I would have no choice but to buy a dv9000t. I'm sure there are other people still buying them for such reasons. It does not make them idiotic, just pathetically desperate.   j/k

Anyway, good luck with whatever you choose & enjoy! :)

    :)

If the drivers and video codecs are installed, then the GPU (or any hardware) can do whatever they want it to. The 8x00M has hardware DVD and hi-def decoding built-in, so that means it will use less power because it's done in the hardware.

AFAIK, normally this type of thing is not built in to the GPU, but that is part of the new feature list for the GF8M family.
