Does anybody here successfully run Windows XP (32bit) on the Dv5z? If so, are the drivers fairly easy to find...or is it impossible?
Just wanna know what I'm up against. Its probably gonna be here soon...

Curious as well, but for 64-bit.

I have not had any luck finding drivers for my dv5z-1003 except for ATI but those were right off their website

Bump guys? Thanks!

I considered switching mine to XP 64-bit, but forget it. From what I've gleaned, XP 64-bit is not being supported anymore. Vista x64 will have more drivers, both now and in the future.

I totally hate VISTA. Biggest piece of **** ever!!! My 10 year old laptop with win 98 was running faster then DV5Z.
-
Wizard, if I may ask, why do you want to use XP?

just like anyone else, get a decent performance (speed, battery life, extra HDD space) something most of us got used to.
-
I've downgraded to XP on my DV9700T and I didn't notice much of a difference to be quite honest. What I did in Vista to improve performance was disable SuperFetch, ReadyBoost, other useless servies and reverted back to the Windows classic theme. Windows Aero alone is a resource hog and by simply reverting back you gain a significant increase in GPU performance. SuperFetch and Search Indexer alone being disabled would improve your system performance. As for battery life, the DV5Z was built for Vista.

I'm still waiting for my dv5z (for my dad to come home actually, international person here) and I'm pretty sure it's gonna be running hot here. When you guys say "hot", in what normal room temperature are you talking about? In my country, daily temps range from 29~35C.
As for SuperFetch and Search Indexer, I don't really disable them. I just wait for them to finish their initial runs 'cause I basically do the same things on my computer. So having them enabled actually helps me I believe. I've not felt any speed increase having them running for a long time and disabling afterwards. -
Anyone try the drivers for the 6735b? I would suspect they'd be very similar to the dv5z.

I have a new DV5Z with the 3450 graphics card and it runs great. I just downgraded it to XP which has resulted in an easy 2x speed increase in almost all functions. This was necessary for some software I was running.
I have all functions operating except 1 and HP tech support acts like the question is from Mars even though it is documented on their own web site.
Here is the issue: The speaker light indicator (quick launch panel on the keyboard) does not function properly. When you start the machine, it is white (indicating speaker on) but as soon as the XP logo screen dissappears it changes to orange. It still works in turning the speaker on and off, but no longer changes color to indicate such.
If I load the latest driver and codec from IDT - the light stays white but sound no longer works - error message in device manager says "driver could not start". Tried manually starting the driver through adminstrative services in control panel - but that does not work. As soon as I go back to the old driver - sound and volume work great - but the indicator light is now orange all the time.
Has anyone sucessfully downgraded to XP and gotten this to work? Can you specify the driver? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated as this is the last little hurdle to clear.
Please feel free to email me directly at: thx1326.at.swbell.dot.net.
Thanks in advance.

I realize this is old, but the question never got answered...
I have 2 dv5z's coming, and I'm interested in running XP on both of them, and dual booting Vista. I'm not worried about the install or anything, but mainly about the drivers, and what will be supported. I found the guide for the dv5 t but that is a lot different... I'm mainly worried about the card reader, webcam, and fingerprint reader. Anyone have experience with these things?
I'm planning on running the backup, burning disks, installing XP and then installing Vista as well, with a third partition for data. Sounds good in theory, I just don't want to have to switch to Vista to use the webcam and other things I mentioned before... I would have absolutely no problem with this if HP would let us have XP drivers, but as you all know they only give the quicklaunch, the rest are only available for Vista.
Any input/help would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks
PS - Those wondering why XP, I have a few reasons, but Vista uses DRM... Enough said. -
I've never noticed any DRM restrictions while using Vista. I had a dv5z over the summer. I installed XP. I got most things working, everything but the indicator lights on the keyboard.
-
How difficult was it to get the drivers? Did yours have a fingerprint reader and webcam as well?
DRM is bad, if anyone ever bothered to read through the Vista license agreement they would be trying to install XP along with me.
Thanks -
I can't argue the Vista EULA. I've never read it, but I was able to do all the things I did with my XP notebooks without any issues. I didn't have the fingerprint reader. It's a waste of money if you ask me. I don't recall the having any issues with the webcam. Like I said the only thing that didn't work properly was the indicator lights on the keyboard.
-
Haha, it's easy to understand why you didn't read it... It's only about a mile long... There's some very interesting stuff in there though.
About the fingerprint reader, I agree, a total waste of money! Not when it comes as a free upgrade though =)
What do you mean by indicator lights, the caps lock etc. lights? Or something else?
Also, do you remember where you got the drivers from?
Thanks again -
Looking around the internet as I recall. Yes the WiFi light, the hard drive activity, etc.
-
Has anyone found a solution for the speaker indicator light on the DV5z after downgrading to XP? If so, please email me directly. Somone else was looking for drivers for the fingerprint reader - email me for these.
Thanks -
First off... Vista is a POS resource hog - most inefficient O/S ever created. Class action law suits support this point.
The DV5z with XP is at least twice as fast as Vista. Who cares about how "pretty" Vista is - I want performance.
Driver availabilty sucks and Vista 64 drivers will probably be no better next year than today - why would any developer waste a single cent on Vista drivers when they know Windows 7 is a year away. And they already know everyone hates Vista - at least those that are interested in computing.
Just how convenient is it to wait 10 - 15 seconds for a standard menu window to open - it's not, period.
Sorry to rant - but what a waste of a great machine. Everyone call HP and complain. -
It is faster than Windows 7.

I'd REALLY like to run XP Pro on my dv5z. If only HP supported XP on it's consumer line.
Vista does not use resources efficiently. -
Using directions from the following sites, I was able to get every function of my dv5z working (except for the mute light, but not a big deal).

The only problem I have is sound quality. I properly installed the Microsoft UAA service pack before installing the IDT High CODEC. The sound works, but I only get 4 mixers (Volume, Wave, SW Synth, CD player) and the quality almost seems mono or far away.
Has anyone figured out how to get good sound quality on the DV5z in Windows XP?
