This is the cable you need:
    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00009V6QZ?vi=tech-data.

It has the extra "mini plug adapter" that will plug into your laptop. As for the sound system, I highly suggest getting the Logitech Z5500. It takes both Optical and Digital (coax) inputs and has a built in decoder. I've had the z5500 for 10 months.. it rocks.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16836121120.

If you don't like the z5500, just look for a system that includes a hardware Dolby Digital decoder & can do optical input (most will).

Edit: gizmogamer, you need this: http://www.radioshack.com/product/i...kw=1/8+to+rca&kw=1/8+to+rca&parentPage=search. Just plug the 1/8th inch jack into the headphones jack on the laptop and the other end into your hometheater. If your home theater system has digital coax, then you could use something like this to convert optical to digital coax.

    hi Lexicus,
    thanx for the useful info.
be nice if I am asking too dumb question. :(

    yes
I have this jack and right now I am using this ;) .
I am trying to get 5.1 sound from my home theater while playing movies.so
if I am understanding right My laptop dv 2000t has digital optical (toslink) output.and via adapter I will get digital coaxial output.but My home theater has only two left right input for rca jack.
and the converter will give me one digital coaxial output.then how will I conver it to two for left and right rca input??

Gizmogamer -- if you have no optical or coaxial DIGITAL input on your receiver, nor a 6-channel coaxial analog input (ie. 6 coaxial ports labeled 5.1 input) then there is NO WAY to get 5.1 signal into your receiver -- for movies or your notebook.

Old school Dolby Pro-Logic is likely supported if it's a surround receiver, which is mixed into a two-channel analog signal, but no 5.1. Sorry.
