    Just wondering --

TigerDirect has a product ( http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2477926&CatId=3770) which lets you connect an external ide/sata drive to a usb connecter.

I am wondering - does any device exist, at this time, which will allow you to connect a SATA hard drive to an eSATA port? I say device because it should include a power supply for the eSATA drive as well as a data cable to go from the SATA hard disk to an eSata port.

i know there are enclosures that do this but im wonderng if i can buy just the power supply and a sata to esata cable to use for troubleshooting...

I have been looking online to no avail.

There are external HDD docks such as this. Google for "eSATA dock".

I highly recommend the Vantec converter. I have something like a dozen of um, and use them for everything from hard drives to blueray burners. They are cheaper at newegg.

The power supply should work with eSata drives. I think you can just get a eSata2SATA cable if needed.

thanks for the suggestions guys. the dock will do the trick but i'd like something that is portable - ie - a cables only solution.

i currently have an ide to usb connector which i use with the tons of old 160gb hard drives i have laying around. i'd like to do the same thing with some new sata drives - take them with me along with the sata drive to esata converter...

    anyone other suggestions?

    thank you guys in advance,

I took three of the $19 Vantec USB/IDE/SATA cables, cut off the excess from the USB cable and trimmed it down to about 4 inches. I added a 2 inch SATA cable, and made a USB To SATA power cable, and stuffed them into a ziplock.

The USB to SATA power cable will run the little 2.5 inch drives I carry as a backup, and I use a Tekeeon 3450 power unit to power the larger drives.

The Tekkeon unit is cool. It will power and charge all our devices (including our DV-9500T's), phones, moble broadband routers, PDA's, TomToms. It will also provide power while we swap batteries on the DV-9500T's.

Whats really cool about the Tekkeon unit is I got an adapter that allows a 9500T power brick to charge the Tekkeon 3450.

In short, we used to carry a huge bag full of chargers and adapters.
Now we only carry one pocket sized power unit, and the notebook's power brick.

The Vantec cable thingy can be found here:

im trying to find a solution that doesnt have a docker, so it'll be more portable.

im going to give you an example -- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812232002

this is an ide/sata drive to usb cable --

that is an ide/sata to usb connector. you connect the ide side to an ide hard drive you have laying around, and the other end goes into the pc. instead of connecting via a usb interface, i want it to connect via eSATA.

this drive is powered by an external power source -- this is the power source(on the left side of the pic) --

so, going back to the first pic above, what im looking for is for one end to have a sata end - that you attach to an external sata drive (not in an enclosure, etc) and the other end goes into an eSATA port - not a usb!

the dockers which have been posted do the job but im looking for a cheap ($20) cables-only solution. by cables only, i mean its a cheap solution that does not require/or have a docking station sort of setup.

The best I could find are these three links which would need to be used in conjunction with one another.

    http://cgi.ebay.com/New-2-5-3-5-Dri...yZ158827QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

    http://cgi.ebay.com/USB-2-0-to-IDE-...ryZ74941QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

    http://cgi.ebay.com/IDE-to-SATA-Ser...ryZ74941QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

This may sound confusing, but I am tired and it's the middle of the night. Bare with me lol. I've included a few links. Out of all of them I know at least one will be sufficient, otherwise two together will work. lol... I'm confused lol

And the final result is something looking like this lol:

It would use SATA instead of IDE through the converter.

Again, why not get a SATA to ESATA cable?

I have two, and I do exactly like you describe. One end goes to the SATA drive, the other end goes to an ESATA port.

^ dont you need a power cable then to power the external drive? i looked up and found the sata2esata cable you mentioned in your previous post but didnt find one that had a power supply to power the drive.

Yes, you will. If the drive uses only the 5 volt connection (like most notebook drives), and does not pull more power than a USB port can deliver, you can make a USB to SATA power connector. You can even make a multiiple USB port to SATA power connector if more power is needed.

Otherwise, you need a power supply, like the Vantec unit has.

So, if needed, get the ESTA to SATA cable, and use it with the power supply from the Vantec unit.

    Hi

This is a pretty old thread, but I'm looking for the same thing as the OP (ie a cables only connection between esata card and a sata drive, without enclosure or dock), and am confused by how to add external power to a sata drive. Any ideas? can it be done?

    cheers!
